Let’s have those lists. All-time position-by-position teams for Gophers football, men’s basketball and men’s hockey.

Wow, we really gave it our all on that post, yes?

All I know is Bronko Nagurski is playing T and FB on my Gophers team. Probably at the same time.

I defer all my answers in this thread to Jon Marthaler, provided McHale and Bobby Jackson are two of his five for Gophers basketball.

Dave Winfield is probably the best Gopher athlete of all time so I’m going to pretend he was good at hockey too.

Basketball:

G - Bobby Jackson

Jon-

Brian Bonin on the first team instead of Mariucci? Are you from White Bear Lake?

Jon

If you had to pick a second 5 for Basketball what would that look like?

I don’t know about McHale or Jackson. Not that they were bad or anything. I’d find it hard to not put Ray Williams, Osborne Lockhart and Willie Burton above Jackson and McHale (who didn’t wow me as as college player).

Bobby Jackson
Vashon Leonard
Willie Burton
Mychal Thompson
Kevin McHale

Who is your pick for one starting running back for the Gophers: Darryl Thompson, MB3, or Larry Maroney? I would vote for Gary Russell soley for the big run to set up the win at the Big House a few years back.

Am I missing anyone from the glory years of the 1960s? Way too young to know if there was a solid RB on the last Rose Bowl team….

Ty Webb: Running Back for Gophers would probably be Bruce Smith. No, not that one, the original one.

I love how when you go to the first one, it says “This article is about the football player. For other uses, see Bruce Smith (disambiguation).” Umm, what is the other Bruce Smith?

Oh, and Bronko would be the fullback blocking for Smith. I don’t care what the Tapeh lovers out there say.

Gophers football is tough–so many of our stars were guys who played ‘End’ because that’s what they called it in 1903 when we were good, or guys like Bud Wilkinson who played Guard and Quarterback (not a likely combo today).

Here’s a shot:

QB: Sandy Stephens
RB: Bruce Smith
FB: Bronko Nagurski
WR: Bud Grant
WR: Ron Johnson
WR:
TE: Matt Spaeth (or Charlie Sanders?)
T: Bronko Nagrksi
G: Ben Hamilton (would be at C, but I don’t know any more G)
C: Clayton Tonnemaker
G: Leo Nomellini
T: Ed Widseth

DE:
DT: Tom Brown
DT: Carl Eller
DE: Bobby Bell
LB: Karl Mecklenburg
LB:
LB:
CB:
S: Tyrone Carter
S:
CB:

P:
K: Chip Lohmiller
Coach: Bernie Bierman

Basketball-
G Bobby Jackson
G Lou Hudson
F Michael Bauer*
F Kevin McHale
C Jim Brewer
*Pending a better coach couldve been one of the best

Would it be wrong to state that Jacobson was as important as Jackson?

Bruce says:

I would trade Ray Williams for Bobby Jackson.
