This player’s scoring goes up to 11

Many thanks to Stu for passing along this fun piece from the D.C. Sports Bog. Apparently a player for American University scored 11 points in a recent men’s basketball game. That wouldn’t be noteworthy if not for the fact that the player’s father had the role of Spinal Tap’s manager in the hilarious mockumentary. If “this one goes up to 11″ means nothing to you, then shame, shame, shame. It appears members of the American U team fit that category.
Hendra’s father, the writer Tony Hendra, has a few fairly notable lines on his resume. … Ask Nick Hendra whether his dad ever gets recognized on the street, or while he’s standing and shouting and waving his arms in the bleachers at Bender Arena, and here’s what Nick will say: “He was in this movie called ‘This is Spinal Tap,’ which was, like, a big cult movie.”
Ah, yes. Spinal Tap. Seems to ring a bell. And so, naturally, the entire Eagles roster is well-aware of its Spinal Tap connection, a connection that by rights should make the Eagles national darlings when they play for an NCAA tournament berth Friday afternoon. Right?
“I’m not familiar with that movie,” star guard Garrison Carr said.
“No, I’ve never heard of that,” point guard Derrick Mercer said.
“I knew about the books, I didn’t know about the movie,” said forward Travis Lay, who at least had seen Spinal Tap.
“Never seen it,” Coach Jeff Jones said.
Sigh.
“I think there’s a certain disconnect there between the people who like ‘Spinal Tap’ and the people who like basketball,” observed Tony Hendra, moments after Nick’s breakout performance on Sunday.
Greater tragedy: Not seeing “Spinal Tap,” not seeing “Slap Shot” or not seeing “Big Lebowski?”

Local Quipster is already warming up his ninja kicking leg…
I can’t decide the bigger tragedy, Slap Shot or Big Lebowski. I’ve tried several times to come up with the answer and now I’m “out with a brain” as Al Michaels would say.
DC’s not a big college town, anyway.
I think Slap Shot is somewhat regional. I know it isn’t all about hockey but if you saw the cover of the movie and you live in Southern Mississipi would you watch it?
Lebowski is the answer.
I’ll go with I’m out like a b0ner in sweatpants!
You mean Spinal Tap isn’t real !!! But I thought they INVENTED stonehenge !
dozens of lines I will be forced somehow out of my mind safely onto paper like this …
Ian Faith: Certainly, in the topsy-turvy world of heavy rock, having a good solid piece of wood in your hand is often useful.
or this from Spinal tap even better !…
[Nigel, introducing the Stonehenge theme concert]
Nigel Tufnel: In ancient times, hundreds of years before the dawn of history, an ancient race of people… the Druids. No one knows who they were or what they were doing…
“It’s like, how much more black could this be? and the answer is none. None more black.”
Of course Spinal Tap would be the biggest tragedy of the 3 films mentioned. Of course that’s also my opinion.
Hello Cleveland!!!
I say, “Hello Cleveland” whenever I’m lost, and nobody ever gets it.
For a hockey fan, the answer is obviously “Slap Shot.” Otherwise, I think it’s “Spinal Tap.”
You know whoever wrote this story was just waiting for this kid to score 11 points in a game. Well played by the writer.
Sometimes, there’s a man…well, sometimes there’s a man.
Not seeing epic tale of The Dude, Walter, Donny and company is like “taking a stranger to the alps.”
This “Big Lebowski” of which you speak … is this a film of some sort?
What’s wrong with sexy?
