Monday (underdogs) edition: Wha’ Happened?

gopherspuck.jpgIs everyone out there in Gophers puck land OK? We just want to be sure. We watched a decent chunk of Game 2 and pretty much all of Game 3 last night from a fairly casual standpoint, and we’re not sure how anyone with a vested interest made it through without tearing a pillow in half or karate chopping a living room table. Sweet mercy. We texted Marthaler just to check on him, and he fumbled something back about a “heart murmur.” We believe he was joking. We sure hope so. In any event, we imagine folks from Mankato to St. Cloud to Duluth were ecstatic to see the underdog Gophers finally catch some breaks. (Great photo of Alex Kangas making one of his 900 saves this weekend by the STrib’s Brian Peterson).

How about Georgia? Seriously, how ridiculous was that run? Four games in three days; a team with four conference wins dealing with a tragedy. The No. 14-seed Bulldogs will have a good chunk of the country on their side later this week.

Sticking with the hoops: To keep the bracket picking simple, we’re going to invite all of you to participate in the challenge already set up through Startribune.com. We’re not rolling with the U Pick’em, where each round you have to pick. This one has you pick the entire bracket. That said: If someone would care to keep tabs on a more complicated bracket (hint: Roughkat, we’re looking at you), we’d be more than happy to steer folks to two different places, with the latter being the “official” RandBall tourney bracket (and the winner gaining fabulous prizes). Thoughts? Sorry, there will be no NIT bracket.

Roughkat, we’re looking at you

That’s what she said.

Ok, seriously though. What did you have in mind? I could probably code a program together in ASCI by this afternoon. I just need the specs on the end line for the rotary girder.

Two things:
Is there any more news on Tom Pohl? That was a nasty hit.
After watching the high school tourney and then about 2/3 of the Gopher games this weekend, I’m convinced that the style of both of those levels would be more effective than the style the Wild are playing these days. All of the High School teams and the Gophers have mastered the “throw the puck at the net” style of scoring goals. The number of bouncing pucks and near misses that the Gophers had this weekend was just uncanny. It speaks both to great goaltending by Mankato, but also to ineffective finishing by the Gophers.

“but also to ineffective finishing by the Gophers.”

That’s what she said. (Not as good as roughkat’s unfortunately)

Put the cheetos down, walk away from the keyboard, and leave the basement ASAP.

If anyone’s looking for some good Bon Jovi tickets for tomorrow night, I’ve got 4 extra floor seats I need to sell. Row 30.

I’m not even much of a puckhead but that game ! I drank so much beer but couldn’t get to the can to make my deposit since at every commercial break, my friends having better position than I beat me to it ..assholes! So, I’ll remember that game as the game the dam nearly broke, but what a game. If hockey was like that always..hell it is …low scoring, wasted chances …blah, blah, blah..but this game, because of what it meant, was awesome. (sorry this post was more about urine than OTs but, hey that’s life)

Dear Gopher hockey: I don’t care if you lose by eight goals to SCSU. Anything is better than another freaking overtime game.

By the way, these fabulous prizes that RandBall speaks of? I wouldn’t put too much faith in them.

What’s the over/under on how many games McKinnie gets suspended?

Jon - I’m sure all employees and their families are not eligible for prizes. That’s just standard.
