We’re writing this from the MSP Airport and working with basically dial-up speed, so you’ll get no fancy pictures. That said: Stu, take it away:

Name: Tim Teufel

Claim to Fame, Minnesota: a second-round draft pick for the Twins in 1980, Teufel had a solid rookie season in 1984, finishing fourth in the Rookie of the Year balloting, behind teammate Kirby Puckett but ahead of Roger Clemens. Was traded to the Mets prior to the 1986 season for, among others, current Oakland A’s GM Billy Beane, enraging Joe Morgan.

Claim to Fame, Everywhere Else: was a member of the 1986 World Champion New York Mets. I don’t know if you can say he was integral, as his error in Game 1 of the World Series caused the Mets to lose 1-0, and the most noteworthy event of his season was being part of a scuffle with off-duty Houston cops. However, my sister-in-law’s boyfriend is a diehard Mets fan from the Bronx, and he says Tim Teufel was awesome. So, there you go.

Where He Is Now: one assumes somewhere in the Mets organization, as he has managed three of the their farm teams, most recently the Savannah Sand Gnats. The Sand Gnats mascot, Gnate, will haunt your dreams and terrify your kids.

Glorious Randomness: Did you know there was such a thing as the Teufel Shuffle? Well, now you do. Also, Teufel is German for “devil.”
