It’s heating up in the Chicago dailies

The Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times do not have the reputation for enjoying a friendly competition. It’s old-school in Chi-town, with bitterness, cheap shots and barbs traded back and forth all the time. But this (via Deadspin) is a little extreme: It seems the Sun-Times has suspended the comment features at the end of pieces by their sports columnists, most notably the rather incendiary Jay Mariotti. So the Tribune has taken the liberty of setting up a place where readers of the rival paper can vent about Mariotti on the Tribune’s web site. The comments need to be tasteful and short, they say. Like this:
C’mon people, Jay gets it. Sticking with one opinion is for suckers. Integrity inshmegrity. It takes a special person to write at a 4th grade level and pander to the lowest common emotional denominator. You guys are just jealous because he was able to parlay zero talent into a prosperous career.
We’re guessing this will not end well. That said, we’re open to suggestions for turning the comment section over here into a full-fledged ripping of other media outlets. Wait, we didn’t mean that. Stop! Close that Pandora’s Box!
