The night air was damp. It had almost a physical presence, hanging from your shoulders like an unwanted backpack filled with spoiled deli meat. Still, I carried on, knowing what I had to do. Someone had to let the people know.

In the distance, I could see them, all of them, completely unaware of what was transpiring. A wave of pity and disgust swept over me. It was as if an occult hand had reached down and slapped me with a nauseating whack. I stopped to catch my breath, and pushed forward. Always, always pushing forward.

I soldiered past the revellers on the patio, damned by their own obliviousness, and entered the tavern. No one noticed me, so I let loose with a primordial yell that I would have thought myself incapable of before the Troubles.

The patrons stopped dead at the sound, and turned towards me.

“You people,” I said in the steadiest voice I could manage, “you don’t know, do you? How could you? But here it is: the Stanley Cup Finals are on right now. The cable went out at my place. Please, put one of the TVs on Versus.”
