Underrated rivalries series: Geno vs. Pat

genopat.jpgThe latest dispute between Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt and UConn’s Geno Auriemma leads us to a fine idea: a reader-generated series on the underrated rivalries in sports. We’ve always thought the fantastic tiffs between Geno and Pat went under the radar somewhat because — and this is no knock on women’s hoops, which we covered for a year back in the day — it’s not as mainstream as, say, Yankees vs. Red Sox. But these are two coaches of the highest-profile programs in the game who, frankly, just don’t seem to care for each other personally. Professional respect? Yes. Otherwise? Not much common ground. So: What are some other candidates for this series?

The Gophers/UND college hockey rivalry may not be underrated within the college hockey crowd, but it’s still a niche sport.

If you are a sports fan, you need to visit the new Ralph in Grand Forks when the Gophers come to town. Great building, rowdy fans.

I’ve been up there a handful of times and it’s always the same. If the Gophers lose the UND fans will rub it in your face at the bar after the game, but then they will buy you a drink. Just a great atmosphere.

Wally the Beerman at the Metrodome and Wally the Beerman at Target Center. Then there’s the Wally the Beerman at the X. And Wally the Beerman at Williams.

The greatest rivalry of all is between RandBall and David Archuleta. They’re both in hot pursuit of America’s heart.

Isn’t Geno vs. Pat the cheesesteak rivalry in Philly? I’d probably go with Geno’s.
