MP109? Wolves now 118th in fan satisfaction rankings

By Michael Rand

A little over a year ago, ESPN released its 2007 “Fan Satisfaction Rankings,” listing the Timberwolves 109th in the overall experience among teams in the four major pro sports leagues and spawning the McHale’s Project 109 (MP109 for short) nickname around these parts for the rest of the season. Well, those were the good old days. The Woofies didn’t have far to fall, but they still managed to tumble to 118th in the 2008 version of the rankings. As Fasolamatt notes, only fans of the Falcons, Lions, Maple Leafs and — drumroll please for last place — the Knicks are worse off. The Vikings “improved” to 110th. That was before Jared Allen, though. All bets are off for 2009. The Wild is the top local squad, checking in at No. 31 (about where they were last year), while the Twins fell from 14th to 39th. Your thoughts?

FYI: Not that you wouldn’t, but be sure to check back here tomorrow. It’s going to be festive. Trust us.

Somewhere, Glen Taylor looks out the window, confused about his surroundings and the seeming chaos…

Apropos of nothing and a week late…

Rand- as both a blogger and “real” journalist, do you have any thoughts on the Washington Post/Christmas Ape fiasco?

It’s going to be festive. Trust us.

OK, the last time you teased us like that, it was because Lisa Guerrero called you. Did Erin Andrews send you a text or something?

To elaborate somewhat on my last post.

Christmas Ape= Popular commenter/contributer on Deadspin and Kissing Suzy Kolber.
Washington Post= Newspaper.

About 2 weeks ago, some pics were posted online of “Christmas Ape” drinking beer at a bar and hanging out with “The Pittsburgh Parrot”. Pictures show that Christmas Ape is in fact Michael Tunison, a sports writer for the Post. Within 48 hours, Tunison was fired by the Post for “bringing discredit to the paper”.

Rand- Sorry for the completely off topic question, I was just scanning the links and was reminded of it when I saw KSK and realized it was never mentioned here.

The Hootie — It was an interesting subject, one I traded e-mails on with a few folks close to the situation. I didn’t post on it because I don’t know Ape at all. In general, I think he got a raw deal.

I don’t even think Tunison was a sportswriter for the Post, more of a local news reporter person guy fella.

on my way to work every day I drive by a building that houses the “mchale institute”

I have always wanted to take a picture and send it to you for all MP109 related posts, but hadn’t seen one in a while. It is now fresh in my mind to do it tomorrow

Okay, how on earth can the Maple Leafs be ranked that low, especially below the Wolves? That’s appalling!

They have a great facility, great fans and a proud history. Granted, the team has been underachieving for the last decade, but they’re not T-Wolves pathetic.

Oh, and nice to see the Wild get the #2 ranking for stadium experience.

(time to delurk)

Nathan, here’s something else to digest: guess who tops the Title Track category. Who’s the first team that springs to mind when you think of teams with deep championship traditions and expectations?

That’s right, the Carolina Hurricanes.

Now I consider myself to be a casual fan of the team (disclaimer: I live in the Raleigh area and picked up with the Canes after letting hockey go when the North Stars flew south. Weird and possibly ironic, I know). But I can’t imagine that one championship and one other Cup Finals run being the only times they’ve been in the playoffs in the past six years earns them the honorific as the Most Titlerific Franchise in Professional Sports, over teams like the Spurs and the Patriots.

Maybe they let the Forbes folks put together that ranking.

By festive do you mean you are going to get drunk at 8 am again, and write whatever pops into your head?

But jama, tomorrow isn’t a Wednesday!!

Should we guess what the Movie Quote category is going to be today? Knowing Rand as much as I do, by which I mean I don’t know him at all. Here are a couple of guesses.

1. Disney Movies
2. Susan Sarandon Flicks
3. 10 different Quotes all from Thelma and Luise
4. RBBH’s favorite movies
5. Cheerleading movies

The Wild could go oh-fer on the year and routinely climb into the stands to pound the hell out of elderly people and still be the most “liked” organization in the state. There is no rose-colored-glasses-wearing fan like the Wild fan.
