Stu’s Hunt Down: Jake Reed

reed.JPGName: Jake Reed

Nickname: “Jake” is his nickname, actually. Given name is Willis Reed. Knicks fans love him.

Claim to Fame, Minnesota: wide receiver, and a good one, for the Minnesota football Vikings from 1991-1999, and then again in 2001. Teamed with Cris Carter for 207 receptions in 1994, an NFL record at the time. Perhaps best known as the Krist Novoselic of Three Deep with Carter and Randy Moss.

Claim to Fame, Everywhere Else: as anyone who followed Reed’s career knows, his half-brother is Dale Carter, or as he was known at the time, “The Troubled Dale Carter.” This was not without reason.

(Note: many Vikings Hunt Downs include an Embarrassing Off-Field Incident®; however, Jake Reed appears to have farmed this out to his half-brother. Good for you, Jake.)

Where He Is Now: thanks to a RandBall tipster, we’ve discovered that Jake and his wife Vinita own the Frisco Thunder indoor football concern of the Intense Football League. It should be noted that the Thunder are based in Frisco, Texas, not San Francisco. This probably explains why their Lineman Coach is Billy Jack Ray. The League has teams in Texas, Louisiana, and … Alaska. I bet that’s a fun road trip.

Glorious Randomness: RandBallers, do you “want to look like a high school cheerleader again?” Of course you do! Then maybe you should invest in a Pro Power Suit, “a 10 lb. full-body multi-sport training suit with 1 lb. patented rubber weights that are strategically placed on the arms, 1 lb. each on the upper back, each side of the chest area, top of each thigh and each hamstring.” But don’t just take it from me! Listen to Jake Reed:

“BETTER THAN THE X-VEST!!! The Gamebreakers PRO POWER SUIT is ideal for all your exercise, fitness, weight loss and sports training needs! Revolutionary!”

According to this press release, Reed and Cris Carter have both utilized the suit, but it doesn’t mention if it also helps you banter awkwardly with Dan Marino on Inside the NFL. I am going to assume yes.

Oh, and here’s an oil painting of Jake Reed’s kids.

I don’t know what else would explain it.

Billy Jack Ray is not to be confused with “Billy Jack [redacted]” - a song by Prince featuring the Hornheads.

Forgot to mention that in the Nirvana/Three Deep analogy, Carter is Dave Grohl and Moss is Kurt Cobain.

Stu

I’d switch those two. Moss’s career didn’t die after he left the Vikings. Carter’s did.

(This statement is absolutely 100% insensitive and I apologize.)

Rand,

What happened to my vs. comments a few topics back?

Fair point, jama, though my thinking was:

Moss/Cobain: enigmatic, otherworldly talent with drug issues.
Carter/Grohl: outgoing, hard-working, drummed on that one Queens of the Stone Age album.
Reed/Novoselic: talented, but not at the level of the other two.

And no, I’m not Chuck Klosterman.

I suppose you could go that way. Although you could argue that Carter’s drug issues were much larger than Moss’s.

Ahh, look at that nice vibrant endzone with the big blocky Vikings letters and actual purple jersys in there to catch passes. Memories.

Liriano is trying to kill me as I sit at my computer right now…

Walk the bases loaded and then give up a 2-run single. Ugh. There goes the lead Gomez gave him…

Dave MN says:

April 24th, 2008 at 2:57 pm

Oh, and then walk them loaded again, sorry

Dave MN says:

April 24th, 2008 at 2:58 pm

4 walks in the first inning, are you kidding me?

Dave

It’s a good thing the Twins brought Liriano up before he could throw a fastball for a strike.

Dave MN says:

I want to throw my computer out the window…damn you Gameday, for giving me the ability to see this!

Dave

He really only got one out, the guy ran into an out at 3rd base.

I miss my brothers.

He didn’t make it out of the first inning. They brough Bass in. I will never expect anything from Liriano again. That way I will never be disappointed.

Dave MN says:

Brian Bass doesn’t seem too interested in getting people out either

Speaking of huntdowns, I just saw Scott Erickson and Lisa Guererro on some Travel Channel show about America’s Top 10 Lake Homes (the wife is home sick today and has it on in the office). That’s a nice little cottage they’ve got there.

Thank you, RandBall commenters, for cluing me in on what happened w/ Liriano w/o having to delve through the inane babble on LE3’s blog.

Just to verify- Liriano just got pulled b/c he was getting roughed up, not b/c of injury, yes?

Nice to hear GoGo is responding well to the day off.

Hoots

As far as I know he just sucked. It was also a great move by Gardy not to have Harris bunt with 2 guys on and no outs. Guess what happened next….if you guessed 3 run HR you would be wrong…if you guessed a typical Twins double play you would be right.

Dave MN says:

April 24th, 2008 at 3:49 pm

jama - Harris demonstrated that he’s a “power guy” last weekend. He now has a green light all the time.
