Thursday (Go-go, KG) edition: Wha’ Happened?
Posted on May 1st, 2008 – 8:27 AMBy Michael Rand
We’re at a strange loss for grandstanding words this morning, so we’ll try some quick hits instead.
*Carlos Gomez is essentially a right-handed Jacque Jones with speed instead of power. He’s not disciplined, you never know where his throws are heading, and he can look awful on one swing and hit the next one to the wall. So what is it about this kid that makes us excuse every bad thing and revel in every good thing he does (i.e. the opposite of how we felt about Jacque)?
*KG should be thankful, not boastful, that he even got to play in last night’s 110-85 Game 5 victory over the Hawks after getting away with a referee shove in Game 4 that might have earned him a suspension if he wasn’t, you know, KG.
*Does this whole Roger Clemens story — and now it’s been extended to a bevy of women, not just a 15-year-old country singer — hurt his Hall of Fame chances?
*MR wants to know exactly what “groin-ravaged” means. Well maybe not exactly, but he’d like some answers. We think he’s entitled.
Fasola-link! Questions and answers.

Re: KG suspension
It’s funny how last year the NBA went by the letter of the law and suspended Amare in the Suns/Spurs series. This year I guess that letter has gotten shredded. Not only should KG have been suspended, but Perkins and Marvin Williams should have been suspended too. This NBA conspiracy stuff has lef the conspiracy behind. If it isn’t Celtics v. Lakers in the Finals I will be shocked. And I’m sure the Knicks will win the ping pong ball bouncing thing.
Does this whole Roger Clemens story — and now it’s been extended to a bevy of women, not just a 15-year-old country singer — hurt his Hall of Fame chances?
I think his steroid use hurts his Hall of Fame chances. I don’t think his personal life should really be in play.
It’s like asking whether someone can be a good president or a good politician if they’ve committed infidelity. Of course they can, they just can’t be a good husband or what a lot of people would consider a “good person”…
Wilt Chamberlain is in the HOF right?
I really don’t want the Celtics to even make the Finals this year. Partly because I think Boston needs another good sucker punch to put them in their place. Partly also because I want Boston to feel the same we did for so many years having KG but not going anywhere in the playoffs. It would be great if all the superstars Boston stole from us ending up never getting them much. I also want them to lose because I’ve been saying that the Finals will be Lakers-Cavs and I want to be right. It makes me feel good about myself.
I haven’t seen any pictures yet but did Clemens seriously sleep with an Ex-wife of both John Daily and Brutus ‘The Barber’ Beefcake?
Also there’s a juicy story about Karl Malone from way back in the day floating around. Who would have guessed that pro athletes would cheat on their wives?
Here’s the Malone story, I guess 18 is the new 13.
Wilt Chamberlain is in the HOF right?
Both the Basketball and Sexual versions. And if the latter doesn’t exist, it ought to.
As for “groin-ravaged,” none of my jokes are appropriate.
Where’s Sooze when the “groin-ravaged” conversation is finally here?
Interesting comparison, Gomez and Jones. Jacque was infinitely more frustrating to watch, however, because he was a proven commodity… there was no doubt of what you were getting from him, and there was no doubt the remote control was always in danger of being shattered into 39432 pieces anytime he was involved. Kind of like Delmon Young now.
Is being “groin-ravaged” Marian Gaborik’s problem?
A Sexual Hall of Fame? Interesting concept. Who else would be inducted? Considering the sex life of the average pro athlete or rock star, standards would have to be very high. I nominate Bill Clinton.
I don’t think there was ever a player in any sport that induced as much groin-ravagery as Dennis Rodman.
Sex HOF- After recent activity, I would guess that Ronaldo would have to be considered.
The Clemens and Malone stories are just perfect for today.
(Language on the vid is a bit Bissinger-esque, so earmuffs on the kids and volumes down at work.)
Too good not to share, and oh so appropriate for today. Coulton is playing at The Varsity tonight- should be a great show.
“Kind of like Delmon Young now.”
Delmon Young’s just a bit of a headcase at the plate right now. But he’s ten times the defense now that Jones ever was. He bailed Sideburns Jr. out more than a few times yesterday.
A couple of us were chuckling pretty good when Mauer went out to the mound yesterday. Looked like baseball’s version of Gunnar and Matthew Nelson.
The difference between Jones and Gomez is age. JJ debuted when he was 24 and showed promise up through his age 27 year. During that time, I recall most opinions of him being pretty favorable. After that he dropped off into a lefty-platoon player with an erratic release point and we knew he wasn’t changing - but he was still being given every opportunity to “learn to hit lefties”, etc.
Gomez, on the other hand, is still just 22 and hope is strong that he’ll figure out how to harness his wild/raw talents into more reliable/greater productivity.
If, in three or four years, he’s still trying to bunt three out of every four plate appearances, attempting steals at random times and yet Gardy keeps batting him first hoping he’ll straighten out, then we’ll be just as frustrated as we were with JJ.
And yes, the Twins essentially found a way to ressurect Torii/JJ - with Delmon and GoGo. Although something got messed up and they ended up in each other’s bodies.
The difference between Jones and Gomez: Gomez may do three horrible things per game, but he makes up for them by doing three outstanding things per game. Jones just did three horrible things and taunted us all with the prospect that he might someday do three outstanding things over the span of perhaps a month.
Jon: +1
Can I nominate myself? Obviously I’m good if I (have to) dump a girl/get dumped (you can choose which one is true) every 4-6 months. I’m mean really, what could I have possibly done wrong?
Ex’s Best Friend: What did you see in him anyway?
Ex: He made me laugh.
Jon - the last two games, Young bailed out his pitchers. They were hammering Sideburn Jr. yesterday but Young was all over the field - tough plays that he made look easier than they were. And he knows how to hit the cutoff man as well as anyone.
