LeBron reminds us it’s not Mother’s Day anymore

lebron.JPGIn case you missed LeBron James’ big adventure last night, here’s a recap: 1) Helped the Cavs tie their Eastern Conference semifinal series at two apiece with 21 points. 2) Threw down a statement dunk over KG in the closing stages (kudos to TNT for showing that over and over again last night. We could watch it 100 times and not get sick of it). 3) Oh, and he barked at his mother, Gloria, “Sit your [redacted] down” after she tried to help him after a mini-fracas with Paul Pierce. The video to prove that while Sunday might have been Mother’s Day, the statute of limitations on that holiday definitely ran out by Monday:

I’m torn here: on the one hand, you really shouldn’t talk to your mother that way; on the other hand, she did, in fact, need to sit her (redacted) down.

Stu, I was thinking the exact same thing.

I think I spend too much time on here…

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve probably said some questionable things to a few women in my day (go figure huh…). I’ve never used the “Big C”, never called someone a B[redacted]ch (to their face), and something I’ve never done is tell my mom to sit her [redacted] down. Do you think Lebron cut off her allowance for a week?

Dave MN says:

Oh yeah, and Bron-Bron’s dunk over KG was beautiful. KG even tried to push him away from the rim and he still put it down over him.

Now that KG’s gone, I think there’s always going to be a little part of me that likes seeing him lose/get owned on national TV/etc. That whole Bill Russell interview thing was horse[redacted], too. I’ll give you one of my rings if you keep playing hard. Would he have been as “proud” of KG when he was on the Wolves. No, because he wasn’t a Celtic, and the jersey you wear is what makes someone proud of you or not.

Crap, I thought I avoided the double post with the stop key. I should know that punctuation just isn’t worth it.

Dave MN says:

Joker, I think he took away the keys to the Hummer that he bought her when he was in high school….

jama says:

I thought it was hillarious that KG basically had to keep LBJ away from his mom.

Soccer moms never learn.

stensation says:

May 13th, 2008 at 11:34 am

Jama: Was it that, or was KG asking LeBron “Who the hell is that you’re asking to sit her [redacted] down?”

KG looked confused.

jama says:

By the way, did you guys see that Spreewell must be spending all of his money on food again. It really tugs at the heart strings.

Sten

It was the 2nd round of the playoffs. Of course KG looked confused.

Stuart Scott is hard at work at a fresh, original caption for that picture.

Joker says:

In regards to Spreewell two things come to mind:

1. Hindsight 20/20 much?
2. Monday Morning Quarterback

Ken the Star Tribune copy editor says:

Throughout all these foreclosure proceedings with Sprewell, has he been seen at all? Where is he, living in the Wisconsin wilderness somewhere? What about that family he told us he had to feed?

Joe Nose says:

She should have soaped his mouth.

Stu says:

May 13th, 2008 at 12:48 pm

Jama: COW.

Jon says:

May 13th, 2008 at 12:50 pm

As somebody pointed out this morning: LeBron’s mom is the same age as Sam Cassell.

It boggles, does the mind.

Stu says:

May 13th, 2008 at 12:57 pm

Jon: really? My mind was already blown when it was mentioned last night that Mike Timlin pitched against the Twins in the ‘91 ALCS. I don’t think I can process this.

Flip says:

May 13th, 2008 at 12:59 pm

You can’t say or type ‘ass’ these days? Sad.

Tim says:

May 13th, 2008 at 1:02 pm

I’m trying to think of what would happen if I ever told my mom to sit her (redacted) down. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be here today haha.

And yeah, I’m pretty sure she had LeBron at an awfully young age, like 14 or 15 or something like that.

Bob says:

May 13th, 2008 at 1:08 pm

Look at the video. His mom was sitting in the seats where the players ended up. It’s not like she ran out on the court to protect her son.
Oh, by the way, there are several very racist comments here. . . .

Stu says:

Oh, by the way, there are several very racist comments here.

No.

Dave MN says:

May 13th, 2008 at 1:16 pm

Bob, I looked through the comments and I’m missing the racism, much less anything “very racist”. You must have been looking harder than I was.

prom4perse says:

May 13th, 2008 at 1:19 pm

Bob…you’re an idiot. Please tell me where there is a racist comment.

MOS says:

CEPEDA says:

Lebron just got emasculated in front of thousands! Had my mother done that with me, I would have said something worse than what he did. His reaction was justified. Hes a grown man, and his mommy came and helped him. So what if it was mothers day? She was wrong.

Ryan says:

May 13th, 2008 at 1:44 pm

Lebron should make her sit in the Upper Level for the next home game.

MOS says:

May 13th, 2008 at 1:46 pm

Thank God you’re not my kid. There are other ways to tell/ask your mom to sit her ass down without disrespecting her “in front of thousands”.

Stu says:

May 13th, 2008 at 1:50 pm

Ah, this got linked on the homepage, I see.

Jeff says:

May 13th, 2008 at 1:52 pm

It is never, never ok to use that kind of language with your mother. Least of all in front of thousands of people, the day after mother’s day, on national tv. I hope the Celtics sweep the rest of the series.

Meow says:

May 13th, 2008 at 2:04 pm

Besides the “non” racist comments on here, you have to admit, its funny watching this video at how angry he is with his mother for getting up.

Terry, Strib reporter says:

May 13th, 2008 at 2:06 pm

Yes, LeBron needs to publicly apologize for his comment. Even though he and Glo are more big sister-little brother than mother-son, LeBron has to be more conscious for the kids’ sake. I think what KG said to him was, “Man, you shouldn’t talk to your mother that way…” I hope she smacked him silly after the game. Believe me, the episode will be the subject of many a column. OK, I don’t want to get all “socio” about this.

StraightCashHomey says:

May 13th, 2008 at 2:14 pm

Disrespectful? Yes.

Worse, because it was the day after Mother’s Day? Questionable.

jama says:

May 13th, 2008 at 2:16 pm

Damn you Strib editors for putting Rand on the front page. Don’t you know this is our little secret?

Terry, Strib reporter says:

Dave MN says:

Whoops, I forgot the “getting out of hand” over-under. Oh well. Whoever guessed the under probably would have won.

As a mother of a ballplayer and an x-ballplayer, I know better. You can always tell when women don’t know anything about the game, they do stupid stuff like Ms. James. On the other hand, her son owes her an apology for swearing at her. No son, how rich or poor, young or old, smart or stupid, should tell his only mother to “sit her ass down!” All he had to say was “Mom, I’m okay.” HOLLA

AZGopherGirl says:

May 13th, 2008 at 2:44 pm

As a mother, I wonder if that’s behavior he learned at home growing up, or if it’s a product of his more recent environment. I always cringe when my 4 year old says something that clearly he heard from me (though I will say none of his words have been of the ass ilk.)

I would also say that there is something to be said for a mother’s protective instinct. I don’t think you can just turn that off.

ramon says:

Does anyone else notice Paul Pierce giving her the “hmmm, not bad” look out of the corner of his eye?

After all, she is Jennifer Aniston’s age.

goat says:

May 13th, 2008 at 3:01 pm

Who cares?!Why is this even a story? So the guy tells his mom to sit down, big deal…Now, today, its the biggest story in the NBA…What a joke

ramon says:

May 13th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

goat - if you don’t get the wider socio-political ramifications of this story you’re not looking close enough. It’s about racism, sexism, the post-Freudian pre-Jungian mind… this story is more important than just the game itself.

It’s a metaphor for the disintegration of values in a post-Modern Western society. Anyone can see that.

Case in point: What does Russell, Havlicek and Bird think about those black stripes running down the sides of Celtic jerseys?

ramon says:

May 13th, 2008 at 3:46 pm

Ooops… I totally read the post wrong. It’s about a guy telling his mother to sit her (redacted) down. My bad.

Stu says:

May 13th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

ramon: I had what the kids call a “laugh out loud” (is there a way to abbreviate that?) moment at “post-Freudian pre-Jungian mind.” Nicely done.

CEPEDA says:

I wonder what would have happened if Barbara Bush did a news conference after the first gulf war and said “You leave my husband alone! It makes him look weak. Having your mommy trying to come and help you when (even though I consider him a kid still) you are a grown ass man, makes you look weak. She was wrong. Lebron was justified. She should be fined for getting invoved in the game. That or Lebron makes her write on the chalkboard “I will not emasculate my son, on national television in front of millions of people ever again. I should be lucky to have such a rich son. Who can buy me lots of nice things. I wasnt thinking at the time and Im sorry.”

Or something like that…..

sam says:

May 13th, 2008 at 6:23 pm

Where was Lebron’s living example of how to properly show respect to a lady? Where was dad (or a real man) to invest in Lebron? After all, doesn’t a King get groomed for the throne? Or have we just witnessed another immensely talented “kid” who is sitting in his castle of sand.. king for the day!
