Weekend Links with Jon Marthaler

We’re really getting down to it now, aren’t we? With Boston’s win at Detroit last night - two road wins in one series, gawrsh! - the NBA Finals is set: it’s The Town That Stole Our Team vs. The Town That Steals Our Players. Hard to pick a winner there; I’m even feeling conflicted about pulling for KG lately. If somebody would explain to me how to feel about this whole thing, I’d appreciate it.
On with the links:
*We begin this week with a long — but worth it — read from Wired Magazine, about the story behind last year’s espionage controversy in Formula One. It’s all there: the details of how one disgruntled worker at Ferrari attempted to use rival McLaren to destroy the Italian giant — and how one Ferrari fan in Surrey managed to bring him down.
*In more local news, three contributors at the T-Wolves Blog take their shots at being GM for a day. After looking at the plans laid out by all three for this offseason, I can only say that I hope that Glen Taylor knows how to use the internet.
*The Big Lead has a great interview with media personality Tony Kornheiser.
*Kansas City Star columnist Joe Posnanski thinks that Ron Gardenhire is the best manager in baseball. Many people would disagree, but take a look at Posnanski’s blog following Wednesday’s ninth-inning collapse by the Royals, which contrasts KC manager Trey Hillman’s mistakes with Gardy’s moves. It’s all made me wonder something that I never thought I’d wonder: is “Poz” right? Is Gardenhire really the best manager in baseball?
*And if none of that does it for you, here’s Greet Machine proprietor Shane Nackerud teaching his kids one of the great lessons of the age: how to be Buddy Rich when you fly off the handle.
That’s all I’ve got for today; enjoy the summer outside, along with its usual thunderstorms.

Bored and indifferent to the Finalists and antagonistic to local administration. But then, I’ve never been passionate about basketball per se.

LAKERS
Vapid and vacuous? Lakers
I kid. Any other team, I’d be rooting for the Lakers, but given I’m Irish, a Jayhawk alum (Paulie!), love Garnett, loved the 1980s version of McHale and thus the Cs, and love the Simpsons, I’m rooting for the Celtics.
BTW, when the Lakers were in Minneapolis, were the team colors similar to UCLA’s? And if so, when they moved to L.A. did they change to their current scheme because of UCLA and/or some nod(/ownership tie) to the Vikings?
Shock of the night: MMA, like boxing, is dirty and possibly fixed. Jeez, who saw that coming?
last night was my first MMA viewing experience and it left me feeling a) slightly less clean and b) confident that we are, to borrow a bit from Bump, done as a society.
Last night was the second time I’ve ever been in Alary’s. Sweet mercy.
