Comin’ this way

We’re swamped here in Mankato and won’t have much time to post until later — plenty of good stuff, with a Hunt Down, among other things, in the works.

There appears to be some golf ball sized-hail heading right for Mankato, which will likely put a damper on the state high school softball tournament in a couple of hours. So let’s hear your worst weather-related sports story. Hey, we’re trying. Right?

“Hey, we’re trying. Right?”

If that’s what you want to call it.

I was throwing my warm-up pitches before the first inning the other day, and I happened to look up at the sky. “Looks like it’s gonna rain,” I thought to myself as I adjusted my ballcap and stepped back on the rubber. A slight breeze picked up just then, right in the middle of my windup, enough to make me shiver a little. The game eventually started, and the rain never came. The breeze remained, until probably the sixth inning or so. We won, I think. Not sure though.

There. That’s the worst story I can think of. Pretty bad, huh?

I was talking to a buddy of mine who was driving his Monte Carlo SS with 4000 miles on it to Mankato. He drove literally through a tornado that was just south of St. Peter. Totaled the car. He didn’t think it was too funy when I said “Almost Made It”.

A new slogan for those T-shirts that will never be:

RandBall: Go half-assed or go home

Too bad the hail isn’t softball sized for the games.

Seacrest out.

Just so you know Rand, before that girl drown to death after drinking as much booze on her 21st birthday as I had on my bar tab last night, Finnigan’s in Mankato had $5 all you can drink from 9-Midnight on Thursday nights. Your loss.

The Hootie, already pantsless, re-reads AZGopherGirl’s comment and embarrassedly puts his pants back on.

@ Joker- In the early 00s, there was pretty much a $5 cup night every night of the week in Kato. Between that and “silver” night at Busters (any silver coin, any drink), it’s a miracle my liver didn’t just flee.

Hootie, what years you at Kato? Me = 99-04.

$5 cup nights

Mon - Hooligan’s
Tues - Pluto’s (Now called Choppers)
Wed - Hooligan’s
Thur - Finnigan’s, Pluto’s, The Haze, Oleander, Mum’s
Fri - Oleander

Tuesday at Boomtown was decent at $4 gets you nickel taps and 10 cent mixed drinks. $8 Pitcher night at Blue Bricks as a GREAT idea.

Joker- I was there 97-03 (stayed for my masters). Spent most of my time at Boomtown (proximity- lived at Campus View) Bluebricks (loved the pizza) and Mum’s and The Haze (hello meat market!) Good, good times.

The current Hootie feels very old remembering those days, even though they weren’t all that long ago.

Growing up in ND, wind was the constant enemy of us tracksters, especially when we went to small towns that has asphalt tracks with no trees or other windbreaks to be found.

Also, they recently moved girls basketball in ND to the fall, and my hometown has had problems with humidity or something getting the floors wet. I think a game was even called off once.

Worst weather sports events I can recall:

Vikings @ Lambeau, Monday night game in the cold rain, made worse by the highlight that is shown over and over and over and over and over and over of Antonio Freeman catching the ball off of Chris Dishman’s back.

Also, for even I played in, senior year football game, played at Montgomery. Rained all day. Wouldn’t have been so bad–except their grounds people forgot to turn off the sprinklers while it rained. There was standing water on the field when we played. Second play of the game, went sliding through a small lake at the 40 yard line. Finally started to get dried off/warmed up at halftime, only to hit the same puddle on the second play of the second half. Would have been fun if it hadn’t been chilly that night.

Hootie

I know what you mean about proximity to Boomtown. I think I averaged 3 night a week there when I lived in Campus View. Building 21 right next to the office building made for a short walk to the bar…and class when I went.

“So let’s hear your worst weather-related sports story.”

Besides having something like this:

almost happen (in both golf and soccer), there was the time we neighborhood boys (i.e. hooligans) decided to play full-contact no-pads (helmet-only) football in the middle of a hailstorm.

Why? Because we were young, strong and did what we pleased. And we had football helmets.
