Guest post COW: Dave MN on the bold Jared Allen

cow.jpgLet’s try something a little new, starting this week: whenever you see a comment that is Commenter Of the Week-worthy, e-mail it to us. We’ll compile a list of the week’s best efforts and run them on Friday to spark the voting discussion. That said, here’s Dave MN’s COW effort:

Wow, what a weekend to spend in the office! You know, it’s kind of nice when you don’t have to see your team completely explode (in the bad way) against the team in front of them in the standings, because you’re doing an accessibility review on a web-based mail application. However, MLB Gameday kept me from being totally shielded from the sheer awfulness that has taken place over the past three days. You know, sometimes Gameday is a beautiful thing. This weekend, it made me want to break the high school state record for the discus, laptop division. 33-10 over three games?! Joe Crede?! RINCON!!! Well, at least, the last person’s career with the Twins will end this week on waivers (rather than the lucrative trade that should have probably happened two years ago …).

That’s enough about the Twins. They ran into a buzz-saw this weekend. The Sox had the same thing happen to them right before (or was it after?) the All-Star break a couple years ago at our hands. A karmic wash, I suppose.

Really, what warrants discussion, on what is obviously his favorite day, is that Jared Allen expects the Vikings to go to the Super Bowl. Maybe we need to hook a device up to the microphones or digital recorders that we interview Mr. Allen with, because I don’t know that there are too many rational people in Minnesota that would make that proclamation about a Vikings team that didn’t make the playoffs last year. Rocket has a book full of reasons why he wouldn’t make that statement.

So the question goes to you: Do the Vikings make the Super Bowl this year? What would you be willing to risk on that prognostication? Something minor like never getting a RandBall T-shirt, something moderate like never getting to be COW again, or something important like your firstborn child (born or unborn)?

Pretty sure we’re throwing the word “rational” out of the equation when speaking of Vikings fans.

I sure hope that the AV crowd doesn’t get a whiff of this.

Onto the question: How are the Vikings going to make it to the Super Bowl if the Bears are already going to the Super Bowl? Have the Vikings transfered to the AFC?

And release the hounds on the Cedric Benson comments!

Do the Bears come early in the season? Will the boats still be out on Lake Minnetonka? Will Cedric Benson’s mom be there?

And, Rand, I really like the idea of gathering noteworthy comments and putting them up again on Friday for the voting. I have earned a couple COWs for late-week commenting heroics that I may or may not have actually deserved based on the performances of others that week.

Somebody call the Freakonomics guys and figure out what percentage of COWs come from Thursday or Friday comments. I’m guessing 60+%.

Dave

Cedric Benson’s mom will not be attending. She is currently waiting in line at Brian Urlacher’s house for a pending paternity suit.

It’s so cute when someone comes to Minnesota with such ballsy enthusiasm. Between Jared going to the Super Bowl, Purple Jesus running for 2000 yards this season, and Tim Brewster leading the Gopher Nation to the Rose Bowl, Minnesota will be restored to gridiron glory in no time! Skol and Ski-U-Mah! (I may have taken more than the recommended dosage of my cold meds).

+1 Joker

AZ: I don’t think the recommended dosage says anything about mixing with vodka over ice.

AZ

If you live in Arizona where the temp never gets below 94, is it still considered a cold?

Rand - There outta be a plugin for voting on comments, or something like that. If not, I’m sure your crack IT staff could whip one up…if they weren’t all let go already. I figure someone must be over there ensuring that page 4 of Sid’s column is nothing but his byline (but, Strib’s gotta sell that ad impression).

Dave, sweet liquor eases the pain. And, Joker, you wouldn’t think germs could survive 102 degrees, but I’ve been sick more here than in Minny. I think I’ll go outside and try sweating it out.

Allen didn’t say the Vikes were going to the Super Bowl. He said he “expects” the Vikes to go to the Super Bowl. The caviar of caveats.

In the same vein, I “expect” Chad Hartman will someday realize he loves the sound of his own voice too much. I also “expect” I’ll go on a date before year’s end.

What else do we “expect” our sports teams to do this year?

I “expect” Jesse Crain to blow leads yet still maintain a low ERA, because he only lets the inherited runners in (yesterday’s homer notwithstanding).
