Stu’s Hunt Down, X-press Edition: Tom Nieto
Posted on June 17th, 2008 – 5:02 PMBy Michael Rand
Name: Tom Nieto
Claim to Fame, Minnesota: was a catcher for the 1987 World Champion Minnesota Twins, although he didn’t play in the World Series. (Hunt Down Trivia: name the other three catchers who played for the Twins that year before clicking the link.)
Claim to Fame, Everywhere Else: was fired at 3:15 Tuesday morning by the New York Mets. Stay classy, Omar Minaya!
Where He Is Now: looking for a job, one assumes. Anyone need a first base coach?
Glorious Randomness: his hometown of Downey, California has also given us the oldest existing McDonald’s, the first Taco Bell, the Carpenters, James Hetfield, “Weird Al” Yankovic and iCarly’s Miranda Cosgrove. Thank you, Downey.

Arrgh! Can’t believe I forgot the third one.
I may someday soon enjoy some Taco Bell while listening to Metallica and thank Downey properly.
These iPhones are great. They even work in the Garden. Bite me, waffle eaters.
I believe the fourth catcher is Mark Salas.
Nicely done, Toonces and gates.
20+ years later, it’s still amazing that they won a World Series with that collection of catchers and Les Straker as their 3rd starter.
Even more amazing is the salary inflation. Puckett was being paid less than a half-mil, while the highest paid was Hrbek at 1.3 mil. Think of how much Torii went for this year, and how much more Puckett would have been paid this year.
I loved The Chief, Mark Salas. Kevin Garnett is still screaming/babbling like a crazy person.
Now can anyone tell me where Mark Salas is today?
I believe he’s a bullpen coach / catcher for the Detroit Kittens.
My bad, it’s the White Sox bullpen catcher
