Let the jinxing begin: Dr. Z likes Vikes to win it all

drz.jpgWe’re entering some dangerous territory: the Vikings are officially becoming that “sleeper” team that everyone is sneakily hot on. They are the Jenna Fischer of the NFL. Problem is, it’s way too soon. It’s only mid-June, and usually the mid-June NFL sleeper becomes the mid-November NFL bust. You can look it up. We would, if we weren’t afraid our theory would be shattered. But we’re pretty sure. It’s science. Too many people liking something theoretically improved but woefully unproven. It can’t end well. Just ask a man who tells a lot of [redacted] jokes, loves the Vikings and may or may not be awesome at foosball. His one-word e-mail reply: Noooooooooooooooooo. The news? This train has already left the station. SI’s Dr. Z has a prescription for pain: a prediction that the Vikings are going all the way. He spells out all the offseason moves we already know about and comes to this conclusion:

So en fin, do I like the Vikings to go all the way? Well, yeah, why not? A feeling of destiny, that’s what I sense about Brad Childress and his baby quarterback.

It’s frightening because Mr. Zimmerman knows a lot about football and picked the Saints to run the table last year. The Saints went 7-9. Everyone: Bet the under. It’s the only way to reverse this rolling boulder of a jinx.

“A feeling of destiny”? Is Dr. Z a teenage girl?

I’m starting to think you can’t be a football fan anymore without being completely insane. Every diehard I know is off his rocker, and thus probably subscribes to terms like “a feeling of destiny.” Gag.

Michael Rand says:

a feeling of destiny is different than a feeling of Destiny. Let’s just make that clear for Joker.

I think I’m going to be sick. Dammit, dammit, dammit.

Some of Dr. Z’s other “feelings of destiny”:

1. If I eat a Chipotle burrito for lunch I won’t need dinner

2. Grass grows fast after it rains

3. If I wear a turtle neck with a blazer people will think I know what I am talking about.

I love how “gay mafia” is an Amazon associated tag with Drew’s book. Perfection.

If Dr. Z has any more “feelings of destiny”, he may just want to use the bathroom next time.

Dr. Z was an awful prognosticator when it came to picking draft choices. Picking the Vikes to win it all is a real “downer”. I wish he had picked them to finish last, then they would win it all! Is this getting crazy or what?

Jon says:

Oh no - my hopes are up now. That can only mean one thing:

The Vikings are going to lose the NFC Championship Game this year. At home. I can feel it coming. I’d rather they go 5-11 than live through another heartbreaker.

Stu says:

Dr. Z should seek medical help.

T-Jak?

Childress?

Has he seen this combo in the past?

9-7……..yawn. Maybe 10 wins if Favre stays away.

Jeff says:

The Vikes will be the first team to clinch a playoff berth.

Missy says:

June 20th, 2008 at 12:57 pm

Okay then. Crown the Vikes the superbowl winners right now. Why even play the games?

stevo says:

How can you say you have any type of good feeling towards a coach who had the best, most exciting running back in the league (AD all day baby!!) and not even start him till the middle of the season! The guys an idiot who never even called the plays in Philedelphia but thinks he can run the offense by himself! Fire him, and get Cowher out of retirement..!! V-I-K-I-N-G-S!

Deek says:

Sassbottom: it’s a long-standing RandBall tradition to greet Uterine-Americans warmly, as Paul Peter Paulos tends to scare ‘em away in the fall.

Remember, this is the guy that said Dan Marino was going to stink as a QB because he always “pushed” the ball.

God, no. Not Z. We’re cursed.

At least he will still be paired with Brooklyn Decker on “Z says, She Says”. Only reason to even look at him while I hurl expletives at him.

Mike says:

If Dr. Z says the Vikes will win it, well I guess the Vikes will win the Super Bowl. Sweet!! Go Vikes!!

I’d quit, but I’d never get to make fun of jama and the bears at the same time because everyone knows I wouldn’t be on here at home.

The Vikings are the team to beat?? People said that in 98 and look what happened, a fluke team in the Falcons came in here and blackened both our eyes. They had that game, but blew it. I guess I’ll believe it when I see it.

ViKingsCrown says:

June 22nd, 2008 at 6:11 am

I think that all of you who wont try to believe we will go and win all the way should consider yourselves Miami fans. It is about time all of us start acting like dallas fans like we will win every game it is no wonder we never make it. It is because the true spirit of all this negativity affects the team. Vikes winthe whole tomale and go 17-0 plus all playoffs and the easy win of the super bowl!!!!!!!

44Vikings says:

aelse says:

June 22nd, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Dr. Z? Really. The whole article he wrote was a give up and didn’t give a reason other than Allen and saying, “Why not?” How about because the coach is terrible and T-Jack is just bad. Give me Bud and Tommy Drunken K. and touchdown Teddy! Those were real 9-7 teams!

Vikingsrule says:

June 23rd, 2008 at 8:00 am

I think the vikings are going to be good this year. Have u taken a look at the vikings defensive line. And not to mention we have the frickin best running back.LT who. And T Jack is going to descent so he throw the ball down field to Bernard Berrien and Sidney Rice. Look out im guessing that we will be 10-6 or 11-5. GO VIKINGS

WIVikesFan says:

June 23rd, 2008 at 8:22 am

Well, it is the 10 year anniversary of the 98 team that went 15-1. Why not celebrate it with another great team, hopefully this time we will not be let down.

James Kallestad says:

June 23rd, 2008 at 9:43 am

I’ve watched Zygi Wilf spend $100 mil on new players this year just to give the Vikes superior offense and defense at “every” position including special teams and backups throughout. This is his year. Right on Dr. Z.

LeePaulsons says:

June 23rd, 2008 at 11:18 am

Those of us who have been Vikings fans for years know that two teams want to win, but only one can win. Jeesh. If Z wants to crown’em, then crown their a**es, but we are who we think we are….or something like that.

We will crush some teams this year, but a Superbowl may be a year or two away.

VikeFan says:

June 23rd, 2008 at 12:52 pm

Is there a web site that has actual Viking football news?

jeffhogge says:

June 23rd, 2008 at 7:08 pm

We all know these predictions don’t matter one way or the other–the only possible way they can is if a team believes them and gets lazy, but I don’t see that as a problem with the Vikes because they haven’t even made the playoffs for a while.

And, while “Dr. Z” is no genius, he did get all his preseason picks right one year. He picked all the playoff teams correctly, the two super bowl teams, and the winner (I can’t remember what year–late 80s or early 90s). Not to overly defend him, just saying he’s no more of an idiot than any of the other prognosticators.

TrueVike says:

June 24th, 2008 at 7:12 pm

There was a guy named “Jimmy the Greek” who predicted the Vikings to get smashed by the 49ers in ‘87 and Minnesota killed San Fran only to lose at the last second to Washington in the NFC championship. Then in ‘98 I watched Dennis Green make the worst coaching decisions possible to lose that one. I’ll believe nothing till they make it to the big game….

TrueVike says:

June 24th, 2008 at 7:15 pm

That’s the Superbowl by the way….

tg says:

June 25th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
