Weekend Links with Jon Marthaler
Posted on June 21st, 2008 – 11:38 AMBy Michael Rand
I don’t know what Rand is talking about — don’t I usually say that it’s supposed to be a good weekend? Especially on a weekend like this, when it’s supposed to be sunny and summery for 48 straight hours? Frankly, if you can’t enjoy a weekend like this, then you should move someplace more depressing, like Duluth or Greenland.
*First of all, congratulations are in order for Minnetonka HS standout Jake Gardiner, who was drafted 17th in last night’s NHL Draft. Gardiner was only the second American-based player to be taken, after Boston University’s Colin Wilson. And it should be noted that this is officially the last time any Minnesota hockey fan will say anything nice about him: it was the immensely-hateable Anaheim Ducks that drafted him, and he’s headed for the much-despised University of Wisconsin in the fall.
*Meanwhile, the Wild drafted Ottawa 67’s defenseman Tyler Cuma. If you’re wondering about what kind of player Cuma is, consider this: After the pick, TSN’s highlights package for the blueliner showed three clips: Cuma standing at the offensive blue line, Cuma trying to kick a puck free from a scrum behind his own net, and Cuma making a breakout pass. This is absolutely true — those are the best highlights they could find. This is what happens when you draft a player that has eight goals in 130 career junior hockey games.
*For the rest of your much-needed NHL Draft coverage, Chris at Western College Hockey has a rather wonderful live blog for your perusal.
*In non-NHL news: the Vikes Geek may have a good point. We might have four good owners for our four major pro teams in Minnesota; it just might be that they all own the wrong team.
*Remember when Page 2 at ESPN was awesome? They kind of had a renaissance yesterday, with an article on the eight types of bandwagon jumpers and another on the most popular bandwagons of all time. Curiously, no Minnesota teams are listed; it’s almost like bandwagon jumpers prefer teams that have won a title in the last 50 years. What snobs, eh?
*And finally: Duke football is so bad that even the American legal system agrees that they stink. On behalf of all Gopher fans with painful memories, I’d like to request that Joel Maturi reschedule all future games with North Dakota State, replacing them with games against Duke.
That’ll do it from here — enjoy the GLORIOUS weekend. (See, Mr. Rand? I can be [redacted] upbeat, too.)
