U.S. Open question: Your viewing strategy

Posted on June 27th, 2008 – 9:12 AM

Just a quick question for golf fanatics out there: when attending a tournament, what is your viewing strategy? Do you prefer to stake out a key hole? Do you like to try to walk along with a particular golfer? Do you mix and match depending on who is making a charge? Do you prefer to work one particular area, giving yourself options within a certain range?

I enjoy watching the holes close to the Clubhouse. That way when you get hungry-you eat, you get thirsty-you buy a beer, you drank too many crappy beers the night before-you are only minutes from the nearest john.

Either that or follow around Gulbis or Creamer.

I’m usually golfing… Zing.

I think the best way is to do what you did - stake out a key hole or stretch of holes and watch several key groups pass by. At the 2002 PGA, we hung out on the back nine in between holes and watched Tiger & Beem and all the rest play 3-9 holes each. I think that unless you’re just in really bad shape, you’d never just want to sit in one set of bleachers all day. Too boring, and you only see 1 or 2 shots from each golfer plus their putts.

Well the other thread has been overtaken. It’s probably better for my Blood Pressure to leave the NBA draft in the past and to move on to thinking about John Daly dressed in drag playing in this years Ladies US Open

I usually stake out a place where you can watch a few holes. At Interlachen i think the tee box at 4 is great because you can watch the third green and then the tee shot at the great par 3 #4.

Had an interesting chat with Wie’s caddie yesterday on the bus ride back to the parking lot. Lets just say he’s not a big fan of her parents.

Results are in and I figure I better post them here or people will rip the RandBallers for their predictions.

Here’s the results.

Leaderboard
44 - RandBall
45 - roughkat
47 - Stu
47 - fasolamatt
48 - jama
63 - Brandon

If my maths is off, let me know. Points were given for how far away a person was actually picked.

BTW - I’ve never been to a golf tournament. I would probably try to follow around a group for a few holes and then maybe try another group for some variety.

I also think you should try to get a cameraphone shot of one of them smoking.

Is this like golf where you want to have the lowest score or like Bowling where you want to have the highest score?

If it’s like Golf you can take your Wolves tickets and go to the game!

roughkat says:

June 27th, 2008 at 10:37 am

jama - I think I’m exempt from the contest since I already own the tickets. I think Stu and fasolamatt should have a mandate where they can also meet and discuss various parenting skills.

Stu says:

Holy crap, did Matt and I win?

Stu says:

I think Stu and fasolamatt should have a mandate where they can also meet and discuss various parenting skills.

Matt: so, how much do you drink after the kids go to bed?

Stu: after?

Stu and Matt should have to go to the game wearing matching Brian Cardinal Jersey’s, Knee Pads, and receding hairlines!

Man, I can follow this string of comments much easier that the CF over on the t-wolves post.

Now, I want a picture of a golfer smoking damnit!

roughkat - according to my calculations, my score is 47 as well (thanks a lot, Mario Chalmers).

Stu says:

Superintendent Chalmers really did cock up the mocks.

My bad Jon. I must have missed your predictions. I’ll go back and find them and update the list.

Stu says:

If you haven’t checked the previous thread in the last 15-20 minutes, it’s essentially become the Unabomber Manifesto, only with ceaseless variations on McHale’s surname.

I got a two because I had Jason Thompson and Jerryd Bayless flip-flopped. Nobody’s perfect. I was only playing against myself though. And it was all in my head… As I was watching.

jama says:

I wasn’t doing to bad until Donte Greene didn’t get picked. I’m not sure which list you went off of for me rk. I only sent Rand about 5 variations.

jama says:

Next time you see Brandon tell him I admire his effor but he might want to stick to futbol.

StraightCashHomey says:

Wow, just checked Stu. I think it’s time for a “you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here” moment over there. I did chuckle about the “Moose Knuckle” typing.

roughkat says:

jama - I used your last list sent last night right before the draft started.

Jon - Can you help me find your list? Didn’t see it. And my eyes are hurting with the interwebs broken still.

roughkat says:

jama - Just found this picture and it made me think of you. Good luck with your team this year.

At least the Twins have won 9 games in a row. Oops, there’s that damn jinx again.

Jon says:

June 27th, 2008 at 11:46 am

roughkat - I may not have posted it. I just sent it directly to Rand.

Geez…the Bears should sign those two up. They’d finally have a right side of the offensive line worth starting.

What is my viewing strategy? Anywhere there is a clear view of Natalie Gulbis! :)
