Weekend Links with Jon Marthaler

Happy Saturday, all — and a happy Saturday it is, thanks to an incredibly dramatic win from the Twins last night. You know things are getting exciting at the Dome when Dick Bremer’s voice starts cracking, and there were two or three times when only dogs could hear the registers that Bremer’s tones were reaching.
A few links to keep the RandBall regulars entertained, while the Proprietor does his US Open duty:
*Let’s start off with some laughter, courtesy of Adam Jacobi at The FanHouse: things seem to be getting a little testy at Joe Paterno’s house.
*On the very opposite end of the spectrum is Michael Weinreb’s retrospective on Len Bias’ death, which you may have missed on ESPN.com earlier in the week. I hesitate to get hyperbolic, but this might be the best piece of sportswriting I’ve read so far this year.
*The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review makes a good point about the Yankees. Sure, they spend more than any other team in the league, and they’re the living embodiment of the Empire from “Star Wars”, but here’s the thing: as George Lucas well knows, people will pay a lot of money to watch someone try to take down Darth Vader.
*The Timberwolves’ maneuvering even made news across the pond, on soccer-focused website Football365 — albeit in their daily jokefest, the Mediawatch column. (Scroll down to the Misleading Headline of the Day.)
*Speaking of Kevin Love, he’s apparently aware of the Stephen A. Smith Heckling Society of Gentlemen. Seriously, watch the video: he knows the inside joke. I’m telling you right now, this guy’s a future RandBall commenter.
*And finally: years ago, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine taught us that chicks dig the long ball. After seeing the following from competitive glutton Joey Chestnut (especially the video), I wonder: do chicks dig competitive eating, too?
Enjoy your weekend — even if you had to be at Interlachen at 7:30 am this morning.
