Weekend Links with Jon Marthaler
Posted on July 19th, 2008 – 12:25 PMBy Michael Rand
It’s been awhile — thanks, or no thanks, to the Fourth of July and to a proprietor vacation — and so I’d like to officially welcome you back to Saturdays with RandBall. It’s nice to get back into the swing of things, with the All-Star Break mercifully over and Vikings training camp just six — six! — days away. And so we hurry on to the weekend links:
* I’ve been looking forward to posting this one: the Daily Norseman has the correct take on the whole Favre situation. Even better, he’s got facts at his disposal, not just the usual Favre-just-loves-football mumbo-jumbo that infects discussions with such irrational boundless optimism about the 38-year-old quarterback.
*In other Vikings news (via Pacifist Viking), Advanced NFL Stats does some digging into how sacks correlate with wins in the NFL — and specifically, how Jared Allen might be expected to affect the Purple in ‘08.
*What’s the deal with Royce White?
*J.E. Skeets has an interview with Greg Oden. If that doesn’t interest you, scroll down to the interview’s final question, which I really wish Stu would have asked to Brandon Paulson, as well.
I think that’s enough for one Saturday. Enjoy your summer weekend, rain-filled though it might be.

Re: Favre/Vikings
I like (and believe) Pat Kessler’s conspiracy theory that the Vikes never wanted or expected to get Favre - the so-called tampering was simply meant to jumpstart a mess that would destabilize Packer Nation:
Spielman: Mr. Wilf - we’ve just received word from agents Bevell and Childress that initial contact has been made. Operation BlueCheese is a go. I repeat… Operation BlueCheese is a go.
Wilf: But Rick… at what cost?
Spielman: Sir, I’m not saying we wouldn’t get our hair mussed. We’re estimating two 3’s and a 5th rounder… one 2nd and two 4th tops. Depending on the breaks. Oh, and a big fine…
Wilf: Rick - I can’t live with the loss of those picks on my conscience. And my image is already…
Spielman: Sir, you need to worry less about your image and more about the greater good of Viking Nation.
Wilf: Fine. Contact proceed with Operation BlueCheese. And may God help us all.
