Pudge Rodriguez to wear slimming Yankee pinstripes

SI.com’s John Heyman is reporting that the Tigers have traded catcher Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez to the Yankees for pitcher Kyle Farnsworth. This was updated about 15 minutes ago and we didn’t see the trade being reported anywhere else immediately (ESPN just put it up right before we posted), but there you have it. Whaddya think? Definitely helps the Tigers’ struggling bullpen, and they don’t necessarily need Pudge’s bat.

I was just saying to myself today that the Yankees could really use a veteran presence on their roster
My first reaction was, “Hey, the Tigers are giving up!” but the more I think about it the more this makes serious sense, probably for both teams.
All we can now hope is that Pudge was somehow the glue that held that team together.
Also, was this seriously a heads-up trade? No additional pieces? I didn’t even know that happened anymore…

I was always of the impression that Elmer’s was the glue that held Sheffield and Ordonez together.
Inge has looked awkward behind the plate for them this year. And I think their other catcher is injured. Anyone know if they have an upcoming prospect?
Or “up-and-coming”, depending how you look at it.
Kyle Farnsworth still had trade value? Enough value for Pudge?? There HAS to be a taker for Boof somewhere, then.
Am I missing something? Is Farnsworth more than a washed up, mediocre, right-handed reliever?
In other words, a dime-a-dozen?
Didn’t getting off the juice slim Pudge more than any pinstripes will?
Pudge is in the last year of his contract and his shoulder is duct taped to the rest of his body. His offense is not what it use to be. Inge isn’t as big a drop off on defense as people thik. Pudge’s defense has been almost as overrated as Jeter’s the last couple of years.
I think he’s been better this year than in years past, but I’m with the majority here. I don’t see the value, and worry that we might have to trade Liriano and a prospect to get Hawkins.
(Reads Stu’s comment, chokes.)
I hope the cost for Hawkins wouldn’t be anywhere near that high. Hard to get much trade value for a guy you’re about to pay NOT to pitch for you anymore.
If Bill Smith gave up anything like that, I’d gladly join the angry, pitchfork and torch wielding mob outside the Dome.
Detroit just wanted to have a guy named “Farnsworth” on the roster.
As long as they don’t also trade for Wormstrom. (Shakes fist)
