The Internets: Blog commenters — awesome or not?

commenter.jpgDave MN linked to a contentious post about Deadspin commenters on a recent post of ours. The basic premise/argument: is the litany of comments about the ladies ironic good fun or sexism hidden behind a fake name? Does it advance snarky discourse or is the anonymous banter closer to reality than most urban hipsters might want to believe. It’s an interesting little debate, so head over there if you don’t mind some swears. One thing we do know: you guys are brilliant. At least that’s what we hear from the Victoria Times blog. Which begs the question: What are the qualities of good vs. bad commenters?

*Registration for the Wifflin’ For Wishes tournament closes today. Toonces51 had a hankerin’ to get a RandBall team together. Regrettably, we will be out of town Aug. 9. But if you can still find a spot open and want to represent, go for it.

*The Red Sox blew their World Series chances by trading Manny Ramirez. No link. Just common knowledge. Jason Bay blah blah blah. He has no aura. They’re toast in October. Case closed.

*The funniest giant soccer ball video you will see all day.

*The triumphant return of RandBites.

Re: Wifflin 4 Wishes

I will be there with my pool league team under the name “10 Balls and a Plastic Yellow Bat”

I think that’s just girls gettin’ a glimpse at guy talk.

“What’d you say to her in that ice shack, Will? … You let her behind the curtain, didn’t you? … You never let them behind the curtain Will. You never let them see the little old man behind the curtain working the levers of the great and powerful Oz. They are all sisters Willie - they aren’t allowed back there. They mustn’t see.”

“Aura”? Are you trying to give me an aneurysm, using a word like that when speaking of tangible success? If so, you win.

The comments she was referring to didn’t bug me because they were offensive, they bugged me because they were unclever. At the very least, be original (Copyright, Brandon 2008). The “+1″s the “Yes, No”s, etc are just painfully unoriginal, and that’s the real offense. You bring the funny, you get no complaints (Copyright, Brandon 2008.)

That is a problem pussy, pictured above.

/And I’m out. Have a good weekend.

Brandon: “Not offensive, but unfunny and unoriginal” seemed to be the general feeling from the Deadspinners who headed over to that site.

I agree that the “yes, no, dude” stuff is pretty unoriginal. I guess I don’t think of “+1″s as being “unoriginal” so much as just a way to show appreciation for someone bringing the funny. It’s the pointless point system. They aren’t comments so much as the equivalent of a high five, fist bump, hearty handshake, reach-around, or however else you might show appreciation to someone for a job well done.

Davidson Minnesota: you’re right. The +1s have nothing to do with it.

-1 to me frown face emoticon.

“reach-around”?

Remind me never to do a job well done around Dave or any of his “friends”.

jama, I wrote that one just for you. I didn’t want your preferred form to be left out.

Dave

I was going to go with a mom joke or a lady friend joke but that is just not creative enough for Brandon. Instead I’m going to let it go and offer you a +1 and a reach-around the next time I see you.

I hope I’m not considered the king of creativity ’round these parts. I called my mom a whore this week just for a laugh. It’s best to ignore me.

After reading that, I have a new appreciation for how decent you guys really are. Well, except for Joker, but at least he’s honest in his marginalization of the ladies.

You mean you guys don’t walk around your workplaces with “+1″ post-it notes?

Dave MN - I’ll actually be there already too, with a company team (which is why I just sent it to Rand, rather than just post it to get people to sign up). Look for the Aware Web Wiffers–and watch out. Literally, I mean–I’ve got control issues with my wiffle slurve–it tends to be high and inside when facing Dustin Diamond look-alikes.

Dude, +1 Post-it notes–that’s an awesome idea.

I use my +1s as currency.

Question: How many triumphant returns - and inevitable hiatuses (if that’s even a real plural) - has RandBites now had?
