TCTOD: When people love more, do you love less?

Ripped straight from the pages of the last post’s commenting section, and as suggested by lattewarrior, we present The Commenter Talker Of the Day from jama (with spelling obviously cleaned up):
I am by no means a music savant. I have heard of The Hold Steady but I think they are more of an “indie” band. If they were to take off and become a huge “mainstream” success do you think that you would still like them as much? Does mainstream equal selling out? Don’t most bands that go mainstream get overplayed, making you not want to listen to them as often?
A few thoughts, first: 1) This doesn’t just extend to music. It can be a favorite player, team, etc., that used to be hidden and has since been discovered by the masses. 2) The Hold Steady is now pretty much a mainstream success. And they’re still plenty awesome. 3) The sentiment described by jama seems to be espoused mostly by those ages 19-24. When you reach a certain age, you like what you like. Usually. Just stay away from Enon because they’re all ours.
OK, have at it.
