Weekend links with Jon Marthaler

Good Saturday morning! If you’re not quite awake yet, just head over to RandBall commenter Sassbottom’s blog. That’ll wake you up in a hurry.
Let’s dive right into this edition of the weekend links:
*Via the Sports Economist blog, the Oklahoman is right in the middle of a ten-part series about OU football coach Bob Stoops. Part five examines the financial impact of Stoops’s tenure at Oklahoma, and has the details of how the Sooners athletic department got out of debt, increased the athletic budget from $26 million to $70 million, raised $120 million for a stadium addition, and added two women’s sports — all because of football.
*On the other end of the have/have-not continuum: Wait, Patrick Reusse doesn’t like Tim Brewster? Boy, I wish he’d spoken up before now.
*Forget rising prices, forget an increase in home break-ins and thefts. The real problem with rising metal prices is staring us all in the face: the grand American tradition of the demolition derby is in danger.
*Man, Jason Kidd is just all heart. If he wins a gold medal in the Olympics, he’s going to inspire children everywhere, and really all Americans, by giving it away — to a casino mogul’s wife. It’s always nice to see just how little the Olympic basketball competition really means to its participants; if the American team captain wins the gold, he’s going to use it as a thank-you card for a nice stay at a hotel.
That’s enough for one Saturday; enjoy the weather, especially if you’re going to the Fair.
