Maybe trading Mario Chalmers wasn’t so bad

The last time we thought about Mario Chalmers, it was to wonder why the Wolves, who were about to become bereft of point guards, would trade the second-round pick to Miami on draft night. Now, we think of him a second time and wonder: is he a guy you want making decisions in crunch time? Because he certainly wasn’t making good choices this week. From ESPN.com:
March Madness heroes Mario Chalmers and Darrell Arthur were thrown out of the NBA’s rookie transition program on Wednesday morning after being caught in their hotel room with marijuana and women, according to several sources.
“The players were sent home for violating program rules,” NBA spokesman Tim Frank said. “They will be appropriately sanctioned and will have to repeat the program next year.”
Sources said Chalmers and Arthur, who starred on the Kansas Jayhawks’ 2008 NCAA championship team, were also fined $20,000 apiece and could start the regular season on the suspended list. But NBA spokesman Brian McIntyre would not confirm that.
“We’re still looking into it,” McIntyre said. “Once we have all the details, appropriate sanctions will be taken.”
The players were caught by hotel security at the Doral Arrowwood resort in Rye Brook, N.Y., where 69 of the league’s rookies arrived last night for the four-day seminar in which coaches, referees and former players speak about adapting to the league. Having visitors at the rookie transition program is not permitted.
Regardless of whether you are as straight-edge as they come or a card-carrying member of NORML, getting caught with marijuana and women at a league-sponsored event that is specifically designed to keep you away from — or at least informed about — things such as marijuana and women is a terrible idea. It’s Whizzinator at the airport bad. At the very least, we can say the pair of future second round picks and cash considerations the Wolves received for Chalmers have yet to mess up this royally in the NBA. So they have that going for them, which is nice.
Thoughts?

McHale really screwed this one up. It could have done so much for his long-term plan of destroying the team if we had taken Chalmers in the first round and kept him.
I’d still take Chalmers and his bong resin over those 2 draft picks who will turn into 2 no-name Europeans next year. Plus the Twin Cities currently have a opening for a trouble making pot smoking athlete.
That Kevin McHale is a genius. To have the foresight like that to trade away a low character guy for some money and a couple picks next year. I think this franchise is in for good things with that guy at the helm…
/sarcasm
“Sources have also reported that Joe Paterno has offered full-ride scholarships to both players.”
My thought is completely off topic. Every time I read this story I can’t help but think of “Super Nintendo Chalmers.”
Best. Ralphie. Ever.
“SKINNER!”
At least the girls were of age.
Who can blame Chalmers and Arthur? They hadn’t been through the training yet.
Now the NBA has set them up for an entire extra year of abusing their super-athlete status with drugs and philandering. Really, I think that the NBA should apologize. If only they’d gotten to these two misguided youths even a day earlier … it’s heartbreaking, it really is.
Say it ain’t so. No more getting your roll on?
Kids! Time to grow up, boyz.
