Tuesday (Strangely calm) edition: Wha’ Happened?

brady.jpgwings.jpgMaybe we’re getting soft in our old age. Maybe we’ve seen it so many times that we’re a little numb to it now. But last night’s game didn’t seem all that upsetting. In fact, we pretty much moved on immediately after it was over. Hey, the Vikings lost by five points on the road to a good team. And we lost in fantasy football because Ryan Grant was stopped at the 6-inch line once and the 2-yard line another time. These are the things that happen. Now: the finer points of what happened during the game will (hopefully) be discussed in greater detail a little later on. But for now, three things: 1) Have you ever reached a similar point as a fan, where you handle things much more rationally than you did in the past? 2) The idea of a Wing Tasting Party was fantastic, as was the execution. Wings from five different shops were represented: Buffalo Wild Wings, Big Ten, Legends, Runyon’s and Rudolph’s. All of them brought something to the table. We highly recommend such a tasting. To complete the feast, Local Quipster’s special lady friend made a Tom Brady cake, complete with bandage-kneed Ken doll. Terrific. 3) The night before the Vikings/Packers game, we had a really strange dream. We moved to New York without any real plan. The pug and the RBBH seemed very confused to be there. But we were still covering Minnesota sports teams and we kept playing phone tag on an interview with — get ready — former Vikings defensive end Talance Sawyer, whom we have never met nor interviewed. Can we get a little help on that one?

Updated to reflect the correct day.

Rather than more detail about the game, let’s compare and contrast the wings.

He says he’s taking it well… but he’s forgotten that it’s Tuesday.

And the answer to question number one: No. Although I was quite calm last night; it’s not due to rationality, though, just a healthy sense of fatalism.

What about the Vikings performance last night didn’t scream “8-8! 9-7 at best?”

The last time you were at Legends, you thought you saw Sawyer manning the deep fat fryer. It was actually Stalin Colinet, but it was pretty dark in there, and you’d had a few.

Vikes and Packers both looked pretty solid. The end.

Come on, spill it: who had the best wings?

I’ve found another advantage to moving here, and it’s that I no longer have to dread facing smug Packer fans the day after. It takes a bit of the sting of defeat away. Low expectations help. As does liquor.

1. The NFC isn’t that good.

2. They were maddeningly inconsistent on the road against a team with a clearly better quarterback that was 13-3 last year, and still had a chance to win.

That said, next Sunday’s almost a must-win now, isn’t it?

What was the concensus on the wings? Were any in the inferno category? If so, let’s hear some stories today about the repercussions…

Big Ten was my favorite wings. Hey, and the post is new and improved now with the correct day! Thanks, Jon.

Stu, what you say is true. But more than having a chance to win, the Vikings were so fundamentally unsound on defense that I just don’t see how they win more than nine games.

From missed tackles over and over again, to Antoine Winfield biting every time Aaron Rodgers twitched his right arm, to the defensive ends selling out the run to (unsuccessfully) go for the sack, I just don’t buy it.

1. Legends
2. Rudolph’s
3T. Runyon’s
3T. Big Ten
5. Buffalo Wild Wings

Biggest idiots:

1. Childress
2. Jackson
3. Allen
4. All fans that pay to watch this team.
5. Zygi

Well at least we have the young and improving Timberwol…….. to watch this winter.

StraightCashHomey says:

Was Jackson’s fourth-down TD pass to Sidney Rice his best as a Viking? A touch pass in a pressure situation that he didn’t overthrow or throw off one foot like a layup. Not saying he’s going to be good, but I think it is one of a couple signs that he has actually improved.

jama says:

I actually didn’t think Jackson played that bad. The problem is that I’ve seen better play callling at most High School games.

1) Did you forget about the Wolves and Wild? I have officially reached this stage with the Twins bullpen also.

2) Forget about the Best wings which were the worst?

3) Sounds like another round of layoffs at the Strib are just around the corner.

jama says:

That last statement should have come with a preface. As a Bears fan any QB that completes 18 passes is having a career game so I may not be the one to ask how Jackson played. Last nights game would have gotten him in the Bears ring of honor.

Mr.Shoes says:

The announcers said what ever Viking fan can see: the offense just isn’t very imaginative. It was painful to watch, but like Rand, I’m feeling pretty OK right now. The mere fact that we (ha!) had a chance to win at the end was surprising enough. The INT to end it was entirely predictable: a hard throw to no one in particular.

JPF says:

September 9th, 2008 at 9:41 am

what i cant figure out is where are the screen passes, the swing passes? Why didnt they put both Chester and Adrian in the backfield at the same time and maybe run one in motion?

Jama: that is an insult to High school football, you take that back. Pop Warner is more imaginative.

Roberto El Doucho says:

September 9th, 2008 at 9:49 am

jama,

Did you just say you thought Jackson played OK?

Dave MN says:

I guess (when you aren’t really trusted to call multiple audibles at the line), if the play-calling sucks, a mediocre QB will certainly look far worse.

newbie says:

September 9th, 2008 at 10:20 am

I, for some reason, don’t care to talk about the game.

So, did you have various flavors of wings from each place? How was this thing set-up? How many wings per person per place? Are there some instructions on a website somewhere I can follow?

Roberto El Doucho says:

September 9th, 2008 at 10:23 am

Regardless of the play calling, it’s pretty hard to justify the one hop passes that are evident everytime he takes the field.

Sorry men, but he sucks. You must admit it. It’s the first move on the road to recovery.

Say it with me….JACKSONS SUCKS!!!!!!!

Doesn’t it feel better?

Paul Peter Paulos says:

I actually did, hard as it is to believe, reached such a rational state of bliss..amd I wasn’t even an old fart. It was in high school where our track team was tearing up the competition (probably because, racist as it sounds, we had a perfect storm of black speeedsters and whiteys like me who could score big in the 400 on up)

Long and short of it, we lost to an enormously talented Green Bay Preble team and on the long drive home, many of us admitted being quite happy to have that season over with. Personally, I never took part in a sport anywhere near as grinding as track, but that year, after all those accolades and effort, I was glad to lose.

Local Quipster says:

18 wings (some guys brought more, and that’s awesome)

All were of Buffalo flavor except BW3, which came with a Caribbean Jerk, Spicy Garlic, Sweet BBQ, and Asian Zing medley.

The Big Ten really came out of nowhere.

Dave MN says:

September 9th, 2008 at 10:33 am

Is Asian Zing as delicious as it sounds?

Roberto El Doucho says:

Dave,

Your question sounds dangerously “gay.”

The Hootie says:

September 9th, 2008 at 10:57 am

@Dave MN- Yes. Yes it is.

Paul Peter Paulos says:

September 9th, 2008 at 10:57 am

Dave, sounds more like some new form of Dex than gay to me..

Dave MN says:

I figured I was opening myself up to some misinterpretation there. Oh well.
