Tonight’s game: A Purple crossroads

It could be argued that tonight’s game against the Saints is the biggest of Brad Childress’ coaching tenure with the Vikings. A victory takes the sting off of a slow start and slingshots the Vikings into an easier portion of their schedule with some much-needed momentum. A loss, however, continues a negative trend that could lead to a downward spiral of a season — one that could ultimately put Childress’ job in jeopardy. Colleague Jim Souhan wrote Sunday about this crossroads and whether a tailspin that leads to change is actually the best thing that can happen if one roots for the Vikings. We understand the point, and it was well-made, but we have always had a problem with the fan concept of hoping a team loses so they can ultimately be better. To us, every season presents an opportunity, and one never knows how things will ultimately play out. But we will seek multiple opinions: would you rather see the Vikings turn things around enough to squeak into the playoffs or go 6-10 and start over with a new coach and some new personnel?
