Name: J.C. Romero

Nickname: Rock

Claim to Fame, Minnesota: an integral part of the early-to-mid ‘00s Twins bullpen, Romero was the power-throwing, 8th-inning lefty that set up Eddie Guardado and Joe Nathan. Although I don’t have access to the Strib’s archives, I’m reasonably certain that every article about Romero while he was with the Twins included the words “talented,” “hot-headed” and “erratic.” This was not without reason.

Talented: Romero’s 2002 line was 9-2 with a 1.89 ERA.

Hot-headed: remember when he showed up Gardy? Yeah, that was awesome.

Erratic: Was sent down to the minors in 2004 due to the sudden onset of matthias guerriera, a condition that prevents Major League Baseball relievers from getting anybody out, ever. He was eventually traded after the 2005 season to the Angels for Alexi Casilla. Just another reminder that Terry Ryan was good at his job.

Claim to Fame, Everywhere Else: because I don’t pay attention, it came as quite a surprise to see him pitching in Game 3 of the World Series. Seriously, he even got the win and everything. Apparently, Romero’s been with the Phillies since July of last year.

Where He Is Now: see above.

Glorious Randomness: Scott Eyre, Romero’s Philadelphia teammate and fellow left-handed reliever, is the brother of former Twin reliever Willie Eyre. As you can see at the link, his honest-to-Marth given name is William Mays Eyre. Looking at his career stats, perhaps Keith Atherton Eyre would have been more appropriate.
