Weekend Links with Jon Marthaler

Happy Day After Halloween! Here’s hoping that none of the RandBall regulars woke up in unfamiliar places this morning, such as “the gutter behind the White Castle,” or “the Stearns County lockup.” I’m not sure when Halloween became an all-purpose party night to rival St. Patrick’s Day, but it’s definitely happened.
I’m pretty much wiped out after updating the preps blog 3,500 times last night, so let’s get right to the links on this fine Saturday:
*We don’t have award categories in the weekend links, but rest assured, this one would sweep the following awards: Picture of the Year, Link of the Year, Comedic Value of the Year, and Mark Mangino Impersonation of the Year. Just click. (Confusingly, a Mangino-related picture won at least two of those awards last year, as well.)
*From Doc Saturday: Do the USC Trojans ever practice, or do they just play Pete Carroll’s (and Will Ferrell’s) straight man.
*Here’s a short essay from author Nick Hornby, who’s a bit worried: did his classic book, “Fever Pitch,” actually ruin English soccer?
*Chris at Western College Hockey believes the incompetence of WCHA referee Marco Hunt was on display yet again last weekend. A note to Hunt: if, five feet in front of you, one player is taking free punches at the back of another’s head, it might be a good idea to step in, instead of just standing there and watching.
[Marthaler rant against another referee removed because only he and a few other college puckheads would understand it and because, as true as it might be, it was kind of hurtful].
*And finally: Twins blogger Nick Nelson has a nice explanation of why Jason Kubel may have upside — and Delmon Young may not.
That’ll do it for me. It’s quite the nice day today — Gopher football this morning, with the Wolves, Wild, and Gopher hockey team all in action tonight. Hard to complain about that, isn’t it?
