Weekend Links with Jon Marthaler
Posted on November 8th, 2008 – 10:50 AMBy Michael Rand
Boy, what a weekend. We’ve got the Packers against the Vikings on Sunday afternoon, the annual Jug game this morning, the Wild in Vancouver… it’s shaping up to be quite the two days. And to the few young folks who decided that it’d be fun to chant “Go Pack Go” on the way out of Mariucci Arena last night: I hope you got hit by a bus.
Anyway, on with the links:
*We start today, as we so often do, with America’s best online sports columnist, Joe Posnanski. This week, he’s got a long look at Bob Feller, who may have been one of the greatest pitchers that ever lived — and yet you never really hear him discussed as such.
*As it turns out, when a player signs a contract with an NFL team, he’s more or less signing up to have every bit of his privacy invaded. You might remember that during the World Series, an unidentified Phillie was quoted of Bud Selig, “I wouldn’t let that guy supervise one of my [bowel movements].” Take heart, unidentified Phillie: your NFL brethren may not have to wait much longer for supervision.
*Memo to Carolina: Time to update that jersey collection, doncha think?
*In these troubling economic times, an uplifting story: a golfer in Illinois claims to have made five holes-in-one in one week. It’s nice to know that, even as the economy spirals downwards, lying remains completely free!
*And finally: we’d like to thank Scrabble, for making something as cool as jumping out of planes into something completely nerdy. [Proprietor note: Scrabble is not nerdy. YOU’RE NERDY. (Sulks).]
That’ll do it for me. Normally, this is the point that I encourage you to get out and enjoy your Saturday, but if you live ’round these parts, it’s snowing. Try not to get depressed — only five and a half months until the weather gets nice again!
