vikings.JPGYou likely woke up this morning with frost on your car. It is only going to get colder now. The local college football team was embarrassed on its home field Saturday. The news on the economy keeps getting worse. So, we ask you: how critical was it to your mood today that an NFL placekicker nudged a long attempt about a foot wide? And is that just a testament, once again, to the power of sports, the sickness of all of us, or both?

Ah, but let’s not dwell too long there. We will get more to the actual game (hopefully) later with the Monday Meltdown. For now, let us recap the brilliantly played Vikings Fans vs. Packers Fans game that followed. It was a bitter struggle during which the cold air, round bodies and setting sun had an impact:

Despite giving away home field advantage and playing with bellies bloated by summer sausage and Wisconsin air, the Vikings Fan team nearly pulled off its third consecutive series victory over the Packers Fan team before ultimately succumbing to a questionable 7-6 touchdown loss Sunday afternoon in Hudson.

Quarterback Michael “RandBall” Rand threw six TD passes but also was intercepted twice — including one crucial pick with the game tied 5-5.

“You have to throw that ball away,” teammate Rocket said.

“Look, I was trying,” RandBall responded.

Rocket had somewhere between 2 and 3 touchdown catches, while newcomer and blog commenter Mike M. had the remaining TD grabs. Crentist, Ganso and Roughkat were less involved with the offense but had critical pass breakups and provided to the overall spirit of camaraderie.

“I catch no touchdowns, and we lose the game,” Ganso said. “Draw your own conclusions.”

Added Crentist: “Talk to me later when I’m not so winded. It was awfully convenient for RandBall to play QB all game while we ran our [redacteds] off. Make a decision in the pocket! That’s all I know.”

The Vikings Fan team, playing a mix of zone and man defense, had one interception by RandBall and could have had a couple more.

“If Roughkat wants to change his commenter name to Wasswa Serwanga, I don’t think anyone is going to bat an eye,” one unnamed teammate groused.

Overall, though, a good time was had by all. (We’ve always wanted to end a game story that way). Oh, and here’s the post-game video.
