I spent the early part of this week in a tree, clinging to my gun, looking for deer. As atonement, I will be spending the rest of the week watching my kids. I look forward to both activities equally, albeit for totally different reasons, but they both tend to keep me out of the loop of the local sports scene. So what can I write about?

I briefly considered focusing on last night’s country music awards, but I am leery of superserving a small minority of the RandBall readership. Certainly a newspaper would never consider doing such a thing.

So maybe we can continue our discussion of the underrated destinations in the region? A few months ago we focused on bars. Next, we discussed pizza. The natural progression would be burgers. Here are my favorites:

1. Kings - Miesville, MN. Kings was also mentioned in the bar post. But they make the best burger around, with about a billion different burger toppings like hot dogs and fried eggs. Make sure you upgrade to the half-pounder.

2. My House. I like to sit on the deck and grill up a medium-rare homegrown 80/20 patty with bleu cheese, cheddar, and a lightly toasted bun brushed with garlic butter. Add a cold beer. Turn on Twins game. Tuck into waistband.

3. House of Coates - Coates, MN. Get “the Swanee”, a mountain of fried onions, bacon, and swiss cheese. Coates is also home of the late “Jake’s” gentlemen’s club. In my youth I passed out in the back of a friend’s truck after the annual Rosemount street dance. I woke up in the parking lot of Jake’s. Apparently I walked inside, paid the cover, found my friends, sat down, was “asked to leave,” and passed out in the bed of the truck again, all within 3 minutes. This may explain why I now enjoy spending nights at home.

Any additional suggestions for under-the-radar burger joints in the 5 state area?
