TFD/TCOTD: AZGG and Denny

AZ GopherGirl sent us this e-mail earlier today:

Sorry to disturb the bustling cubicle farm, but I need this rumor or half-truth confirmed. I turned on the radio here this morning and heard a caller say there would be a press conference tomorrow to announce a new head coach, and said coach was formerly a coach with the Vikings, the Cardinals, and in college. Anyone we know? The problem is that I missed where they said this press conference was happening. The second problem was that this wasn’t a sports talk radio station - it was the one that has been playing Christmas music since Halloween. It might have EZ in the call letters. The third problem is that I thought they said the caller was a bus driver. Not that bus drivers aren’t credible sources, but what exactly does this bus driver know and how does he know it?

What does all this mean? Are there any new Denny rumors I should know about?

We have to say emphatically, “No.” The only thing we can think of is that Carl Hargrave, a former Denny assistant with the Vikings and Cardinals, was hired to coach at Mesa Community College. But AZGG’s heart attack moment — her first since the picture of Mychal Thompson in old-school short shorts a couple weeks back — does spark a question to close this day:

Of any coach who has come and gone here, which would you least like to see come back?

McHale ‘05. Bad enough having him in the front office, but those were truly dark days. I liked Saunders, and that felt too much like tyranny.

I have to imagine Dan Monson is the correct answer here. I can think of no redeeming qualities. At least Les Steckel was crazy.

I bet Cal Stoll could make better halftime adjustments than Childress.

Glen Mason. The only reason I’d want him back is to chant “Fire Mason!” at all the sporting events. This was the only unifying theme of his last two years at the U of M. People still chant this occasionally for old times’ sake.

Every T-Wolves coach not named Flip.

That’s a relief. I hope Carl is as successful at the MCC as I’m sure he was in his sports management business (http://www.thisisitsportsmanaging.com/). His “fun & mental football clinics” ooze Denniness.

Lou Holtz, the amount of spittle left on microphones and podiums around town would make finding bleach impossible in this town.

Bud Grant. Because he’d probably shoot half the team and eat them.

Mike [redacted] Tice

Scandal during the Childress Era: Players are busted by the NFL for using “water pills.”

Same scandal filtered through the Tice Era: Coach is busted by the NFL for mandating that his players sell him thier “water pills.”

Very good talker, Mr. Rand.

These coaches are not welcome back:

1) Clem Haskins
2) John Gutekunst
3) Jimmy Rodgers
4) Danny Monson
5) Gene Mauch

Stu says:

Gene Mauch won’t have any problems fulfilling that request.

I was hoping last night that Whitless would have suddenly disappeared. I don’t want him back.

I hope Jim Wacker doesn’t try and come back.

Randy Wittman - oops, I guess he’s back already!

Brad Childress - oops, not quite gone yet.
