Wednesday (starting a franchise) edition: Wha’ Happened?

LeBron James was flapping his gums again last night, presumably because another person asked him to do so. The question, which we have been hearing since about five minutes after he was drafted and will be hearing through 2010: will BronBron stay in Cleveland once he hits the open market? Many NBA teams are not so subtly clearing cap space and loading up garbage trucks full of cash to make a run at him and his talented draft class brethren. As grotesque as this speculation is (particularly for a fan in Cleveland), it does beg a question: let’s say one market that does not currently have a pro sports franchise (like, say, Las Vegas) was told it could have its pick of these three leagues coming to town: NFL, NBA or MLB (sorry, NHL, but they only use ice in Vegas to cool down your vodka and Red Bull). And part of the deal was that they could pick any player from any of those three leagues with whom to start their team. If you were in charge of this decision, what league would you want the most, and who would your player of choice be?
