That outdoor hockey game at Wrigley will be awesome
Posted on December 12th, 2008 – 2:14 PMBy Michael Rand
The NHL today released an artist’s rendering of what the NHL Winter Classic 2009 at Wrigley Field will look like. That game, between the Blackhawks and Red Wings, is on New Year’s Day — just a few weeks away. And, um, that looks pretty spectacular. Wethinks something like this needs to happen at the new Twins ballpark, yes? (And thanks to Stensation for passing along the image).

So you DID promise Jon a hockey post each week.
Will Secord be available to suck?
It’s Mystery, Alaska! Is Little Richard singing the national anthem(s)? Any implied player/reporter sexual hijinks like the end of the movie?
I can’t wait to not watch this game.
“Wethinks something like this needs to happen at the new Twins ballpark, yes?”
Don’t worry, the Twins home opener in April 2010 should look very similar.
You just made Marthaler’s list, Brandon.
It will work out better at TCF stadium.
Random Joe: good point.
If the NHL really did release such a rendering, I hope that that is not it.
That is just one really horrific bit of photoshopping. And they photoshopped little ad-circles in, too? The NHL isn’t even trying anymore.
Seriously, they can’t pay someone $30 for a pencil sketch? What the hell. This level of careless ineptitude should be reserved only for Timberwolves homegames.
I think Muxhut is just upset because he realized tonight is his bachelor party and he requested that since he isn’t a gentleman that we can’t go to one of their clubs. Instead we’re going to run around outside with flashlights.
I just got free tickets to the Timberwolves tonight, I tried to give them away and was met with: sorry I can’t, no thanks, and oh I thought you said you had basketball tickets!
Oh and the outdoor hockey thing looks cool, except it seem super far away from the stands.
To the artist’s credit, if you look closely at the building to the left of the scoreboard, you can see Penny and Willona.
Holy geez, Swamptown. +2
justing thinking about the possibility of an OUTDOOR gopher vs. sioux hockey game at TCF makes me slightly tingle and a tad (rhymes with hoist)
I’ll go along with Muxhut and say the artist really mailed it in. Consider the following:
- It sure seems obvious that the rink stretches from 3rd base to 1st base.
- If you remember our friend Pythagorian, he would tell you that the distance from 1st to 3rd is about 127 ft and 3 inches, give or take.
- A normal NHL rink is 200 ft long.
- So where the [redacted] do those other 73 feet go?
Wrigley Field, you just been mathed!
Ms. Mpls
“ready to get it on in the TCF men’s room stall”,doesn’t rhyme with hoist.
They should make the rink twice as big so fans can be close. That, and let it be like 8 on 8 or something.
and free beer or hot chocolate/kahlua mixes for everyone…
JAMA - if only i some IOWA in me, then perhaps. otherwise negative.
wait, wait, holy foot in my mouth on that last comment. i meant if i was from iowa or had any relatives in iowa.
going to join the lemmings now.
Y’know, “artist” rendering aside, I love the idea of outdoor hockey. Just think if all pro teams had to play in roofless stadia, the entire Norm/Dallas debacle could not have happened.
Applying that to other sports, the Timberwolves would be a nigh impossible occurance, as well. I think we can all agree that that would be for the best.
(resisting temptation to confuse Norm/Dallas debacle with ongoing Norm/Houston debacle)
Well played, matt.
Good thing they left the on deck circles there. Now Elisha Cuthbert and Rachel Hunter know where to sit.
+1 to Stu about Secord sucking.
