vikingaddiction.JPGThe original promise was 1:30 p.m. The second promise was 5 p.m. And then, at 5:50 p.m., it arrived — better late than never. Here is AZGopherGirl’s report from yesterday’s 35-14 Vikings victory. And no, that’s not her husband.

When I asked to defer my COW post to do a dispatch from the Vikings/Cardinals game, I thought I would be bringing something unique to the RandBall table. You know, lifelong transplanted Vikings fan braves the hostile home environment to show her Purple Pride, and lives to tell about it. I had no idea that practically everybody and their brother (or at least Stu’s brother) would be there wearing horns, Vikings ponchos or strange custom-made satiny capes. It was amazing to see such a sea of purple and to hear the roar of “Let’s Go Vikings!” I now know how it must feel to be a Hawkeye fan in the dome (without all the drunken stranger bathroom relations.)

This was particularly awesome because my anti-Viking husband and his anti-Viking friend attended the game with our group. These Vikings haters are from Iowa and South Dakota wastelands, respectively, so one can only guess that they’re just really bitter about the hand they were dealt at birth (but we can’t all be born in God’s country). Both purchased Cardinals gear solely to avoid being identified as VbA (Vikings by Association). Both talked smack all weekend. Both were quickly silenced.

I made them stay until the stellar end, when much high-fiving among the purple-clad ensued as we exited. By this time the AZ “faithful” had bolted (actually, most bolted much sooner), and the swell of Vikings cheers coming out of the stadium was intense. This made the anti-Vikes even crabbier. Both said they didn’t hate the Vikings team as much as they hated the Vikings fans. “Act like you’ve won before.” This attitude can be directly attributed to Sunday’s return of the KAO and a dismal showing by their adopted team, I know. But we all know drunken Jake Reed jersey wearing idiots who make the rest of us look bad. I ask you to take a moment to self-reflect — do you really think Vikings fans are more hate-able than those of any other team?
