Vikings tickets: 14,000 remaining, great seats available

By Michael Rand

dome.JPGWe received an update about an hour ago indicating there are still 14,000 tickets remaining for Sunday’s playoff game between the Vikings and Eagles. While the economy surely isn’t helping, the press release sent by the Vikings made it sound as though tough times aren’t exactly crushing the other three home venues. At least that’s how we read things from the release:

Minnesota Vikings fans rallied on Monday to purchase more than 6,000 tickets to the NFC Wild Card Playoff matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday, January 4, at 3:30 p.m. The NFL playoffs open this weekend with host teams Arizona, Miami and San Diego all receiving fan support to sell remaining tickets for their games. “Our fans have a proud tradition of giving us a strong home field advantage,” said Steve LaCroix, Vikings Vice President of Sales and Marketing/Chief Marketing Officer. “We still have a long way to go, but we are confident our fans will join together and exceed the support teams are enjoying in other NFL cities facing the same challenges.

Indeed, the Vikings had 20,000 available as of around this time yesterday. That means they sold 6,000 or so in the past 24 hours. The Dolphins sold out by mid-day Monday — burning through about 25,000 available tickets in a flash. San Diego sold 17,000 tickets Monday, according to the team. Ticket sales were not as brisk in Arizona, but the club reported having about 8,000 left to sell at the end of Monday.

That leads us to one of two conclusions: 1) Minnesotans, known to be frugal, are pinching pennies more than their warm-weather brethren. OR 2) Despite a 10-6 record, a division title and the No. 3 seed in the playoffs (and with victories over the top two seeds during the regular season, regardless of what you think of the circumstances), a great amount of fan apathy exists with this team.

On the first point: Plenty of $30 tickets (the cheapest option) remain. But it’s not just the nosebleed seats that are available Sunday. A quick Ticketmaster search found that one cannot get a pair of the most expensive $160 seats. [Update: Thanks to Hockeydad, who noted in the comments that he was able to find a pair of $160 tickets. We tried a couple times earlier before putting up this post but had no success. A few minutes ago, after seeing his comment, we tried again and we were, indeed, able to find two tickets in Section 134, Row 12. In fact, in a different row we could find 10 such tickets together. Not sure what the glitch was earlier, but thanks to Hockeydad for setting things straight.] But the next-priciest tickets, at $120, are readily available. In fact, just for fun we kept increasing the number at that price we could find together. We got all the way to 16 tickets in the same row — Section 105, Row 36, in the corner of the end zone. That would run someone about $2K, but still. That’s a lot of prime tickets, and an indication that even people buying tickets aren’t always going for the best available seats.

On the second point: The rabid-ness of fans certainly doesn’t match 1998 or even 2000. Not even close. Folks are still skeptical about Brad Childress and still lukewarm about the brand of football being offered. But there is enough chatter about the team, and enough people watching on TV, to suggest that only part of it is attributable to the team itself. Part of it, we’re guessing, is that people don’t enjoy going to the Metrodome — not just for the building, but for the atmosphere. It’s loud, it’s aggressive, and it can be a hassle. Why go when you can watch on TV, we’ve heard countless times.

It remains to be seen, though, whether that will be an option Sunday. We’re guessing that despite the obstacles mentioned, enough people will buy tickets by 3:30 p.m. Friday — our projected time by which the Vikings would have to sell out to avoid a blackout, factoring in the 72-hour before kickoff rule plus the 24-hour extension that will likely be granted — to avoid the first NFL playoff blackout in any market since 2002. It might take a bailout by Fox for the final few thousand, but by then it would be worth the network’s dime to not lose local ad revenue.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on why you think tickets sales are dragging, what will ultimately happen Sunday and what this means for the Vikings in 2009 and beyond.

I have decided to take this news as a compliment. We Minnesotans, smartest folk in the union, realize the game is a lot more fun to watch at home than in person.

Contrary to popular belief there is not strong support for the Vikings in the metro area. The outstate fans are better but this is humilating. We only really sell out about half our games when you account for TV bailouts. Don’t think that other fans are delighting in our embarassing situation.

I checked ticketmaster right after the game on sunday for tickets and all I could get were nosebleed tickets way up in tne corner of the field for $80 plus fees. I don’t think that is a bargain at all and will stay home rather than a drive there for a few hours and cost of parking, etc. This has nothing to be do with being frugal but being sensible. cut the cost in half and I would consider this. I disagree there are good seats left! Good luck Vikes - will cheer from my home tv in South Dakota.

Are Minnesotans the worst fans in the country? You betcha. And to think that some want to give the $750,000,000 Vikings to build a new 80,000 seat stadium. If I owned the team I would follow the Lakers to LA. This area doesn’t deserve a franchise. How can Green Bay sell out all their games and we can’t even sell out playoff games?

Louie Zerr says:

Terrel Owens is good - but he is not someone most people can root for. The Vikes are good, but with Childress - it’s just tough to root for the Vikes. He simply does not generate a lot of excitement and enthusiasm for fans.

ITS NOT THE ECONOMY, WE (THE VIKINGS FAN) HAVE BEEN HERE MANY MANY TIMES. WE ARE NERVOUS AND ARE EXPECTING THE NORMAL VIKING MELT DOWN IN THE PLAYOFFS. T-JACK HAS PLAYED VERY WELL IN THE LAST 3 WEEKS..BUT THE PLAYING FIELD HAS CHANGED..AS THE ONLY GAME AT 3:30PM ON SUNDAY..T-JACK WILL FOLD UNDER THE LIGHTS AND NOT HANDLE THE PRESSURE ON NATIONAL TV..DONT GET ME WRONG..I LOVE THE VIKINGS BUT UNTIL THEY (VIKINGS) WIN THE BIG ONE, WE WILL ALWAYS EXPECT THE WORSE AND HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR.

At $30 per ticket for a family of 4 from out of state it costs $120 for tickets and $60 for food. Now that doesn’t account for gas or possible hotel stay if you don’t want to drive 3 hours after the game.
At $12/hr wages that amounts to 2 days take-home pay just for food and tickets.
I think I’ll stay home and save my money for necessities.

Since moving to Minneapolis several years ago, I’ve found Vikings fans to be the biggest fair-weather fans in the NFL. Even though they are finally in the playoffs for the first time in how long, the team will be playing to an empty stadium since their fans can’t muster enough energy to get there. I’m not at all suprised that the Metrodome will probably not sell enough tickets to even get the playoff game on television. Go Eagles.

This market is over saturated, plain and simple. The Vikings compete with the Twins, the Wolves, the Wild, and the Gophers for the sports fan’s dollar. If the Vikes were the only game in town, this game would have sold out in a heart beat. As for me, I’m saving my money to pay for my season tickets in the new TCF Bank stadium. Like many fans, I’ve made my choice with my meager earnings in an extremely over-saturated market. It is that simple.

I am a season ticket holder and I did not buy the playoff tickets for 3 reasons:
1. The dome is the worst venue in professional sports.
2. Ticket prices were $115 for uper deck tickets.
3. I only got 2 days to make my decision on playoff tickets.

It’s truly pathetic that we can’t sell this thing out. So many fans have unrealistic expectations and continually think back to the “glory days” of the late 90’s and how these teams don’t measure up. While that may be true, this is PLAYOFF FOOTBALL! Wake up, people!

If we can’t sell out a home playoff game, how is an owner (or the state) supposed to invest any money into a new stadium (where there no doubt will be no $30 seats). Truly, truly pathetic.

This game will sell out. I have been to 17 or 18 games at Lambeau Field starting before the Fav-re era. The first game we went to in 1989 we bought tickets AT THE GATE! Stub hub had tickets for less than face value for Packers games after they went in the toilet this year. Contrary to popular belief, every team in the league has their share of “fair weather fans.” Just go to any other major newspaper website in the nation and read the same griping!

I’ve had 2 season tickets since the dome was built in ‘81. They are good seats. We pay $125 per seat during the season - that includes preseason games. That pricetag seems to move up exponentially year in and year out.
Then I get the mailing from the Vikings a couple weeks ago for playoff tickets, and they want 160+ per ticket. 320+ bucks to just get in the door to watch a stinkin’ football game? No thanks. I’ll watch it on TV. The greed of the NFL is palpable. It’s not about being a fair-weather fan - it’s about being sensible with your wallet.

I defy any of you knuckleheads who will surely call me a fair-weather fan to compare how much money you have put into the MN Vikings coffers since 1980, then we’ll compare how much I have, and we’ll see who the fair-weather fan is…

I hate the metrodome. I go to Kansas City and Milwaukee to watch my beloved Twins. I go to Green Bay (outside, big concourses) to watch the Vikes and be insulted by the most self-righteous people in the world. I will quit going to Kansas City and Milwaukee when the new open-air with large concourses stadium opens in 2010. I love the purple, but refuse to go to more than one game a year because of the stadium. One trip to the concessions and a stop at the bathroom costs me a quarter and a half of football. At home I miss one commercial. Build a new stadium and I will buy season tickets just like next year at the Gopher stadium. Besides that I’m sick of going to Green Bay and putting up with classless people. We need a NFL stadium in Minnesota that we can be proud of. Pawlenty needs to step up with some type of plan or the Vikings are gone. The fans are rabid here! They just hate the metrodome! Go Vikes!!!

Joe Merlot says:

It’s the brand of football. Period. The tenative nature of Childress’s approach to the game and that attitude rubbing off on the players has created a product that is almost unwatchable. I’m a die hard viking fan of over 30 years and I’ve been compelled to turn the game off at times out of disgust. The last series before the end of the first half on Sunday was one such time. Most fans that I talk to feel the same way. I guarantee that if the vikes were a dominant force and and entertaining team to watch, they’d sell out every game without issue. Just like they did in 1998 through 2000 (even though they never even made it to a SB during that time).

Joe Merlot says:

December 30th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

By the way. Even though I shut the game off at times in digust, I usually turn it back on in 5 or 10 minutes after cooling down.

I haven’t been able to walk away from the Vikes, but Childress approach to the game makes it extremely difficult to watch.

conehead says:

December 30th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

Anybody who buys from ticket master is a fool. You can get tickets on the plaza from scalpers for under face value. Viking tickets have been a buyers market for years. The demand simply isn’t strong enough. Are we the worst fanbase in the NFL? Probably not but this one looks pretty bad and is getting national attention.

Wenzy says:

December 30th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

The number one problem why people don’t buy tickets is they don’t know how to effectively use ticketmaster! Seriously, I am not joking. Clowns that post on here that it costs $160 to sit in the upper deck have no clue. If you just go with the best available, then yes you will get something like that. When they see a ticket in the upper level for $160, they immediately assume that all upper level tickets are expensive. My favorite seat is upper level endzone, I am DEAD SERIOUS. I have sat everywhere in the dome. $50 a piece for this game in the 10th row. Can see all the plays develop and holes open. Get to the game, SKOL VIKES!!!

IOWAVIKE says:

Fox will buy up the tickets if it cost them less then 150K. Otherwise enjoy the sunday afternoon movie. I will enjoy the Vikes Win at the Dome. If you don’t like the dome then don’t go but don’t bitch about a blackout either. It is what it is. With the economy people are saving money and this state had the chance years ago to build a new stadium and chose not to.

Dave says:

December 30th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

Thanks, Minnesota, for not buying up all the tickets :)

Thousands of fans are driving from Philly to come support the Eagles. I’m coming in my friend’s big, absurd (but totally cool) Eagle-green-van…

But I don’t say that in dislike. I like the Vikings and everything your team is doing. Being an Eagle fan, I have great respect for Coach Childress and I’ve been rooting all year for the Vikes ((as a number 2, behind Philly :-)). So unfortunately we’ve gotta meet now. If you win I’ll support you all the way, but, for now, be on the lookout: tons of Eagles fans are coming west to visit your city for this game…

Bryan says:

December 30th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

Gee, maybe fans lack of enthusiasm has something to do with the Vikings only beating 4 teams with a winning record this season, plus a couple that went 8-8. I’m a lifelong Viking fan, and I know the routine. Limp into the playoffs (let’s face it we barely beat the Giants backups), face a team we should beat in the first round, and than go home the first weekend in Janurary. Every year I hope “this is the year”, but let’s face reality, with this coaching staff and their play calling and clock management, a stud running back who suddenly can’t hang onto the ball, and an in-over-his-head QB, it sure seems like we’re in for more of the same ole Vikings. I certainly hope not. SKOL

Sean/NC says:

December 30th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

Last 10 years fans got tired to see the same old Vikes. It has been so many ups and dows and of course fans are shaky with this game. I do not blame anyone. That’s called the REALITY. It is a good waik-up call the entire Vikes organization. 1998 is still so many millions of fans memory and it is not easy to forgot that season. But, as of today great Vikes fans will fill the Metrodome no matter what. I really do not care who’s our coach. Just make it happen and take Vikes to Superbowl. Fans are waiting and this is overdue last 10 years. It is time to Vikes to play in Superbowl.

kernelHack says:

December 30th, 2008 at 3:47 pm

A couple of points: First, I really doubt the game won’t be soldout. If there truly are 1000’s of tickets left in a few days, then let the ripping begin. (I’ll be there right with you)

Secondly, I think the real measure of fair-weather fans would be if the TV ratings for the game dropped along with stadium attendance. In the relatively few times that the Vikings have struggled to sellout games over the years, the TV ratings never drop. Not selling out the stadium is bad, but if everyone is still at home watching the game, then they aren’t fair-weather fans. It means they don’t feel seeing the event in person is worth it, which speaks to a number of things - but probably most of all the venue.

BFE2008 says:

December 30th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

MIKE — Right idea. Sellout the game on game day. True fans will be in the dome. An if there is a lot of Eagle Fans great for the local economy. Hotels, bars, restaurants and stores should enjoy the uptick in sales.

I’ve seen a couple of Vikings games at the Dome over the years, and I must say that I like it better on TV. Its not just the stadium, its the fans, the food prices, etc. Just doesn’t make sense to me, I’m not much of a football expert, so having the commentary really helps me follow the game.

That being said, this is a playoff game, they don’t seem to happen here often, so I sprung for two nosebleeds. The $30/ticket is deceiving thought, since after ticketmaster takes their pound of flesh, the total was $81.67, making it a markup of over 21%. I hate ticketmaster.

Well lets see EVERTON– NorthStars started in 1967 and LEFT the GREAT STATE OF HOCKEY without ever winning a CUP!! An have existed for Eight Years and have only played 7 seasons. I will take the Vikes having won their division 15 times and have been to the Superbowl 4 times and lost over the history of a team/sport that left the state and only got to the cup twice.

45% of season ticket holders choose not to buy playoff tickets. That says a lot in and of itself. I wouldn’t call the season ticket holders “fair weather fans,” so obviously there are other reasons. High prices, crappy stadium, or team without a chance of beating the Eagles, take your pick.

guitarmanpd says:

I’d be curious how ticked sales would be if the game wasn’t at the lousiest of the four times possible this weekend. I live about 300 miles away, I have season tickets, I have tickets for the game Sunday and I plan on attending but I sure won’t enjoy the ride home (although a Viking victory would sure help in that department). I need to be at work by 7:30 Monday and we’re talking winter driving here. Nobody better call me a “fair-weather fan” if the score is lopsided and I try to beat the traffic.

I have been to three games this year and I am five hours away. I wish I could go, but I have to work. Glad I have a job though! The Metrodome is got to go the venue sucks. I was at the Bear’s game. There was no room to move around inside the dome almost to the point it is unsafe. I felt unsafe, especially if there was an emergency and you really had to get out of there. You miss to much of the game that you pay dearly for when you have to go to the bathroom. There is no radio or video of the game while your waiting to go to the bathroom. The list goes on and on. The Dome has to go. Build a new one and they will come.

A few thoughts:

1. I’d rather watch it at home than at the stadium, that doesn’t mean I am any less of a fan. You can be a fan without attending games. To say you don’t like the team if you don’t go to the game is the most idiotic thing a person can say.

2. What is wrong with being a fair-weather fan? Really, it’s entertainment and we all choose what we spend out entertainment money on. I’m realistic. The Vikings are up and down, so why should I spend my hard-earned money on tickets, parking, over-priced beers and food when I can watch from home? It’s might right to go or not go or cheer or not cheer.

3. Football is much better on TV. You have the announcers (even though they sometime suck), replays, can have your own food and beverage at your disposal, and you can sit in your own comfortable chair without annoying morons next to you.

4. If you don’t like what I say, have a big tall glass of shut up juice!

5. SKOL VIKINGS!!!!!

Jake says:

Does anyone think Ziggy has the stones to ask for a publicly funded stadium again this year when they can’t even sell out their first home playoff game in 8 years?

Question 2: If the Vikes don’t sell out, and get crushed by the Eagles, does Zygmut finally realize he needs to cut Childress loose to get the fans bleeding purple again?

The answers are Yes and No…too bad they should be No and Yes.

guitarmanpd says:

Response to Everton: 3:30 is a relatively lousy start time if you’re driving home 300 miles this time of year to get to work Monday. Saturday would have been great, the earlier Sunday time would have made things much easier. Considering the Vikings’ strong out-of-town fan base I doubt I’m the only one who feels this way.

Former STH says:

I started buying season tickets the day after we drafted Randy Moss. When he was on the team, I couldn’t stand watching on TV. He was always down field and wide open. You couldn’t see that on TV until Johnson/Cunningham/George/Culpepper etc. launched it. Now, with AD, you don’t need to be in the stadium to see the whole picture. With the current team, I prefer to watch on TV.

Vikings fan says:

December 30th, 2008 at 4:19 pm

I have had season tickets for 6 years. To buy a play off ticket for my $50.00 seat would have cost me $147.00 per seat. I think this is to much money to watch a game from the Metrodome, the building is not user friendly. The Prime time games are hard to watch being that they have so many side features, skits and commotion going on between plays. I love football but I don’t think the Metrodome is going to work for football much longer and I don’t think the folks of Minnesota will pay for another stadium. I hope footballs stays in Minnesota but I think it will be a up hill battle.

Fans aren’t buying into Childress’s system. Boring football and the offense stinks. QB play has been pitiful since the Childress regime arrived. Just a really unimaginative and unproductive offense (other than Peterson). Teams stack the line against Peterson. Without him they would shut down the passing with no problem. Offense always looks out of sync and I am always amazed when they complete a pass. This coaching staff stinks and they should be gone. I’m glad they have a defense but sad they lost their offense to get it.

Let’s stop spending all of this energy and emotion debating the question of whether the Vikings game will sell out. By the time we have recovered from our New years eve fun, even in the face of hard economic times, all of these remaining tickets will be gone. Having tickets left this far ahead of a playoff game is not unusual. I will be there and by the time pre-game warm-ups conclude, each of those blue seats in the dome will have a warm body. Three days ago we didn’t even know if the Vikes would be in the playoffs, let’s try to relax. I like to watch football in the dome, I think it’s great. What is all the negative noise about? By the way, it would be good form for all of us to leave the dome, regardless of who wins, under the legal limit. Finally, let’s stop bashing the team, coach and everyone else who defends the team. Lot’s of fans in other NFL cities will be watching the Vikes on TV Sunday rather than their own team.

So only if the Vikes win the Superbowl will I be wrong! I am so proud of my great football analysis and knowing how stupid everyone else is. My first job was at the Old Met peddling pop, popcorn, candy, peanuts, etc as a kid. When it got cold during the last half of the Vikings seasons we sold hot chocolate. I remember the Old Met continually sold out the 49,900 seats it had even when the temps dropped below zero. Some of the great playoff clashes of all time occured at the Old Met - many years against the Rams & Cowboys. The Minnesota winter weather was aHUGE advantage to the Vikings during those years.
I remember when the know-it-all politicians forced the closure of the Met so they could ’spruce up’ downtown Mpls with a new stadium! I remember seeing hundreds of thousands of signatures on the countless “Save The Met” petitions that circulated around the Met’s parking lot for a couple of years before it was closed. Everybody can thank our greedy, shortsighted, dumbf*ck politicians of the 70’s for what we have now. And yeah - if you’re a former greedy, shortsighted, dumbf*ck politician from the 70’s who contributed to this Dome fiasco and are reading this, please choke on your chili dog as you LISTEN to the game on the radio on sunday!

For the entire revenue they are getting about 300K for the game (national + local; as noted in earlier article in ST; they could buy about 3K at those steep prices. So, because the season ticket holders bailed on those seats without a Wilf backed bailout I just do not see it happening this time. We all know they have one game to play - PERIOD.

We have to BOO sooner because the team is only around a year or two,.
We also have to Cheer sooner (when truly deserved) for the same reason.

This is coming from an Eagles’ fan. I was at the last game between the Eagles and Vikings during last year’s regular season. I am also going to this game because the tickets are so cheap and plentiful. I disagree with a lot of things that have been said about the Metrodome. I have been to a few football stadiums that are way worse and more uncomfortable than the Metrodome (while baseball is another story). I would put the Superdome and Texas Stadium below it. Also, someone said something about have loud, non child friendly fans. I have to say, at least from where I was sitting, it was the complete opposite. You would faint at an Eagles home game. It had to be the fewest cuss words I have heard during an entire football game, as well as the best treatment I have gotten being a fan of the away team. There is no reason that there should be so many tickets remaining that are so cheap. Not to mention it is a PLAYOFF game and you can see Adrian Peterson play.

There’s no debate on the state of the Dome, it’s likely the worst venue in the NFL. So what? Think like the Mets fans & Shea, it may be a dump but it’s our dump. Too loud? It’s the NFL in America people, it’s supposed to be loud. To many drunks? Probably, but that’s a reflection on society not the Dome or the Vikes. Hey I’m not sold on Childress either and I get as frustrated as the next guy watching the guys cough it up 7 times in a game they otherwise dominate. But this is my team and I’ll be there.

I’ve never lived in Minnesota but I’ve bled purple and gold for 45 years plus and taken crap from Packer fans for just as long. The Metro Dome ain’t pretty but it’s where Minnesota Viking fans live. Minnesotans…You Are Viking Country! That’s the way the rest of the NFL world views you. Look, there are Viking fans in damn near every sports bar from Long Island to the Golden Gate and many of them dream of spending one afternoon with 60000 like minded brethren in purple yelling for the Vikes.

If times are tough and you can’t make it I feel for you, I’ve been there. If travel expenses and missing Monday at work is beyond your means that’s understandable. However, if you can afford it and travel is reasonable, but would rather stay home and watch TV because you get a better view then by all means do just that. I’ll be driving up from Dayton (airfare is ridiculous, we all have are limits) and I’d rather party and scream like hell with 6 guys who feel the same way as I do than 14000 who’d rather watch it on their TV because the stadium is to loud or they think they get a better view…give me a break.

I’m a born and raised vikings fan. I now live out of state, but still cheer just as hard as ever. I find it unbelievable that the game is not sold out. I guess it’s true; we are the worst fans in the country. I watched the game against Atlanta, and couldn’t believe how quiet the crowd was. Talk about lame. Ziggi out to move to LA. I’d still cheer for them, and their fan-base wouldn’t be filled with boring, quiet, complaining, fair-weather fans.

For that matter were you cheering on any of the countless Viking fumbles and mistakes in that game? Get real. GO VIKES!

The Vikings have a talented roster no doubt. And if the Vikings do get through the Eagles the fan interest will increase two-fold. That being said I don’t have faith in this coaching staff. Brad is not a teacher and the offensive scheme’s are bland and predictable. That should be the first oreder of business. Fire the offensive game plan. And the defense is run by over half the league so beating it without the starting middle linebacker and nose tackle shouldn’t be a problem for the Eagles. I love the Vikings and always will but I have no faith in Brad or Darrell as quality coaches. We have the best running back in football, go get a coach to match.

Phillygrlzrnasty says:

Hey Philly,
Ok I will give you what we all know, that the Eagles will probably beat the Vikings. But dont act like your city is better. Really? Your city is 2nd only to Detroit as being the scumpool of the US. Your airport sucks, your city smells like horse****, and your women are not anywhere close to being in the same league as our hottie Scandanavian women. In addition, Phily is the only big city where I saw one of your scumbag citizens push an elderly woman down because she wasnt walking fast enough. So you enjoy your playoff victory. Your city should be where we empty our trash to.

Boring, TJack-hopeless, stupid stadium fake noise, over $100 for anything decent. I’m not going even though I have the dough and my kids are begging.

The Eagles win when they run for 130+ yards they have lost all but one game when they didn’t. Good luck running for even 90 yards in this game. Eagle fans better hope McNabb is 100% healthy because he will get knocked around alot in this game and we all know what happens when he gets jumpy in the pocket…..INT. This sets up for a lopsided Vikes win.

Just went to ticketmaster.com to get tix. So, they have you re-type those two scrambled words before you check out. The words that came up on my order? “Violent Apathy.” You can’t make this stuff up.

Metro says:

December 30th, 2008 at 7:25 pm

Here is why I have no interest in going to the game:

It is the insanity of the pricing. For $240 (not including the Ticketmaster fees that are associated with the order), I can get a pair of decent seats to the game. Then figure anywhere from $20-$50 to park in decent proximity to the Dome. Yeah, I can park in the ABC Ramps and take the light rail but then have to deal with the craziness that is the line waiting to load up on the trains after the game. With tickets and parking alone, I’m pushing $300. THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS.
That doesn’t factor in a beer or two at the game, maybe a dog, maybe a pretzel, the 80+ miles to drive to and from the Dome. Doesn’t take into account waiting for 15 minutes to take a wee. And my BIGGEST PEEVE, the idiots who don’t know how to walk through a concourse. Groups of morons just parking in the middle of the walkway blocking EVERYONE from getting around.
All this for three hundred plus dollars to give to the NFL? NO.THANK.YOU! I’d rather take a chance that I can lay on my comfortable couch and catch the game in HD on the 46 in. Sharp in my living room.
Why doesn’t Goodell (sp?) take the money from all the fines he imposed this year and lower some ticket prices. There’s a crazy and outlandish idea, but a great crazy and outlandish idea.
Some of you may call me fair-weather. Some may call me a bandwagoner. Call me whatever. But I’ll be that fair-weather bandwagoner with $300 extra in his pocket.

millbash says:

December 30th, 2008 at 7:27 pm

Viking fans are going to wake up to the fact that upwards of 20,000 of those fans will be Eagles fans who bought up the remaining tickets. The Viking PR hack is kidding himself when he thinks Viking fans are buying this tix. I once saw Eagles fans fill up half of Pro Player Stadium for a Dolphins game. It was like an Eagles home game. Expect the same this Sunday.

When there is as much or more green/gold in the dome for a packers game (Childres or not), when 20 other teams would rather be in the Vikings shoes in the playoffs and we complain that the team is not exciting enough, and when the out-of-state have more fans at the Cardinals Games than home fans, and when the noise level in the dome for the Atlanta game is a kin to a funeral, then the answer is the belly-aching home fans. Not all fans, mind you, but a very vocal number that, even if the Vikes win Sunday, they will not give credit to the team or the coaches because the Eagles were the sixth seed, or played in consistently, or some other poor excuse. True, Childress is not a fan favorite (including me) for many reasons, but get out and support the Williams Wall, AP, Jared Allen, Kleinsasser, Hutchinson, Birk, Berrian, Greenway, Taylor, Kluwe, Longwell, Shiancoe, Jackson, Frerotte and WINNFIELD. This is the team that we all support, bleed purple for, and throw the remote at the TV. Stop using Childress as an excuse not to attend the game. There are 40 other reasons to attend!

Schedule the Parade says:

These comments are funny. I’ve never seen more fair weather fans in my life or more lame excuses why fans won’t attend the games. The bottom line is that this is the playoffs and true fans will show their support no matter where and when the team plays. If Minnesota can’t sell out a home playoff game, then the NFL should revoke the Vikings charter and let the owners move the team to a place where they will get support.

I decided to take my two sons this weekend, they may not get a chance for a home playoff game for many years after this. It will be my first game at the dome since the 1998 season. The funny thing then was that it was easy to get tickets in August because the bandwagon was empty. Obviously it was different a after the 98 season. But now the bandwagon is empty again so I look forward to being rewarded with 51-10 drubbing :-) They even stopped playing Skol Vikings for fieldgoals back then.

You will see that to sit between the fortys it will cost you a cool 150.000 grand for a thirty years lease on your seay then the yearly tickets start a four grand a year. All seats have a seat tax on them the lowest being three grand. All new stadiums have seat taxes plus ticket price. New york are going to have them the packers have had them for years. So you bulid ziggy a new stadium the firt thing thast happens is your taxes go up which he doesnt care
. Then he slaps a big time seat tax on everyone. For those reasons a new stadium makes no sense.

For the amount of money it will cost to go to a game it is hardly worth it when you have drunks spilling beer on you in the 1st quarter, and then again in the 3rd quarter. When you are at home, you can get up and grab a beer/coke for yourself during a commercial break without shelling out 5/8 bucks a piece. Metro, I’m with just about everything you said. It is getting painful to watch games on TV with all the commercials. The last two games have been brutal at home and they suck all the energy out of the stadium when you’re there. The crowds in the tiny concourses are terrible (people are drunk and/or idiots). I will say that you can park 3 blocks from the Dome for $10 bucks, so that might be a stretch unless you want to tailgate across the street from the Plaza. Frankly, I just think that there are lots of other things we’d rather spend our cash on here, especially when things are tight. I’m dropping $100 for a New Years Party after getting through my Christmas shopping. I’ve been to the Dome probably 10 times this fall for Vikings and Gophers games (not counting a couple September Twins games). It’s pretty tough to justify another couple hundred bucks right about now. I think the Vikes have as good of a shot as anyone in the NFC they’ve played with or beaten 4 of the other 5 teams. It’s gonna be fun down there on Sunday, playoff games are unlike anything else. I was there in ‘98.

To all, if you’re interested in buying tickets, just go down to the dome and get them on the street. Avoid the fees. My guess is you can get in the door for $15 maybe less. Brokers are freaking out about how bad it could be for them.

I have seen the passionate Denver fans and the crazy Husker fans. YOU PEOPLE OF MINNESOTA ARE THE MOST PATHETIC FANS IN THE COUNTRY. I can’t believe the play off game hasn’t sold out. So what if the Vikings have broken our hearts over the years, you still have to support them. You still have to be excited about having the first play off game in 8 years. You won’t support a new stadium, but approve of a new stadium for the Gophers who haven’t done anything significant in years. You are going to lose the team. If the Vikes do move, I hope the NFL never grants another NFL team to Minnesota, you don’t deserve one. But, you probably don’t care. You people from Minnesota are terrible sports fans, hell you lost your hockey team several years ago. How does Minnesota lose a hockey team? I wish I could get up there and see the game, but I am 9 hours away and have to work on Monday…..I have an excuse. What are your excuses. I love hearing Packer and Philly fans rant about the great fans they are. Isn’t Philly the 1st stadium to have a court house in the basement of it’s stadium due to all the idiots fighting during the game? As for the Packers…sure you sell out games but you sure as hell don’t attend them. Look at your attendance figures in the 80’s and you’ll see that Lambeau was 80% full for some games but sold out. Nice fans in WI to throw money away and not attend the games.

There are so many factors here, and I would argue that it has little to do with whether or not we are real fans. Money obviously is the largest factor. Fifty dollars is NOT cheap. The metro area is not that big. Many fans come from a ways away, and we all just spent a week traveling for our holidays. Not to mention the weather. Lastly, despite the noise factor. The dome is NOT great. The audio/video is terrible. the sight lines make it hard to see, parking is trash, food is brutally expensive. So yeah, we arent all rushing out to spend what tiny bit of money we may have. That doesnt mean we arent fans or that we dont deserve a team here in MN.

I dowant to Laugh at the Patriots and their bandwagon fans as mentioned above. I believe one thing Vikings and Eagles fans can agree on is that now that the Pats can not cheat in games they are done. Patriots are the Barry Bonds of Football.

It is sad when people feel they need to pony up their hard earned money for a new stadium. If the stadium sucks so bad, don’t go. Or let the owner build one. To spend tax dollars on it is absoutely ridiculous.
