Vikings QB wish list: Who ya like?

Posted on January 7th, 2009 – 11:38 AM
By Michael Rand

thelist.jpgWe had a brief happy hour meeting with Local Quipster last night, and as usual it required him to hastily obtain a pen and a piece of paper (in this case a cocktail napkin) for a list. LQ, who “played the game,” is not sold on Tarvaris Jackson as the Vikings’ quarterback, to put it mildly. We tend to agree. Bottom line: the Vikings should not — nay, cannot — go into next season with the plan being T-Jack No. 1, some other ancient QB as the definite backup and Booty as the No. 3. Quarterback can’t continue to be a question mark position. So the two of us compiled a list of quarterbacks who would be both “possibly” available either via trade or free agency, and also desired. We came up with 16 names, then ranked them. Here is what both of us had:

1. RandBall: Donovan McNabb. Local Quipster: McNabb.
2. RB: Matt Cassel. LQ: Jeff Garcia.
3. RB: Garcia. LQ: Kerry Collins.
4. RB: Matt Hasselbeck. LQ: Brett Favre.
5. RB: Favre. LQ: Hasselbeck.
6. RB: Kurt Warner. LQ: Cassel.
7. RB: Collins. LQ: Warner.
8. RB: Marc Bulger. LQ: Byron Leftwich.
9. RB: Derek Anderson. LQ: Anderson.
10. RB: Sage Rosenfels. LQ: Bulger.
11. RB: Leftwich. LQ: Rosenfels.
12. RB: David Carr. LQ: Billy Volek.
13. RB: Daunte Culpepper. LQ: Carr.
14. RB: Volek. LQ: J.P. Losman.
15. RB: Losman. LQ: Culpepper.
16. RB: Rex Grossman. LQ: Grossman.

Obviously, several factors are in play. McNabb and Philly’s recent resurgence seems to make it unlikely the Eagles would deal him, even with Kevin Kolb waiting as the heir apparent. Cassel will likely be designated as a franchise player by New England, tying up nearly $30 million in QBs on that squad but giving the Patriots a year of insurance against Tom Brady’s knee injury. If Cassel was a non-exclusive franchise player, any team signing him away would have to give up a pair of No. 1 picks. That’s a lot to give up based on one good season. Garcia is a free agent and seemingly a good fit for the Vikings’ offense, but he also turns 39 in a month (if only Minnesota would have signed him two years ago …). Hasselbeck is intriguing, but there is no concrete evidence — just rumors — that Seattle would trade or cut him. Favre might retire. He might stay in New York. He might marry a buffalo. You just never know. Plenty of baggage, but playing in the Dome is still a better fit than the swirling winds of New York.

On and on. Such matters were, of course, factored into the list and debated endlessly. And now, we open the floor to you: What is your wish list, what is a realistic expectation, and what, ultimately, do you want to see out of the QB position next year?

The answer to all those questions is Grossman!

lattewarrior says:

Bulger’s contract is massive. I’m sure STL would love to get a phone call about him. That said, realistically I’d go with this wish list:

1) Hasselbeck
2) Warner
3) Leftwich
4) Garcia
5) Favre

LQ, who “played the game,”

At a high level, or was he dominated like Marthaler in high school?

Stu says:

1. McNabb
2. Hasselbeck
3. Cassel
4. Favre
5. Rosenfels

Yes, the gag reflex kicked in when I typed the gunslinger’s name.

Merx says:

1. Hasselbeck (for his wife)
2. Garcia (in twilight of career which fits the Vikings modus operandi)
3. Rosenfels (Cyclone)
4. Warner (same as Garcia)
5. Trade up to draft Bradford

Matty says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:02 pm

McNabb is the only one on that list that I’d consider and maybe Garcia, but they’re both so old they’ll fall apart at any time without warning. The rest of the list is about on par with Gus Frerotte with a bit more mobility perhaps.

Nothing good here as a final solution and certainly no sure things. I’d rather go with Jackson.

Chris says:

I like some of the names on that list, but nothing for a long-term option. Although I suppose if you look at the post Tommy Kramer era, the Vikings have succeeded very well with 1-2 year veteran stop-gaps. Even when we tried a long term QB in Culpepper, it netted us 11-5, 5-11, 6-10, 9-7, and 8-8 records (1-3 in 2005). Not that great.

On that end, I think acquiring Cassel would be a huge mistake. This is a guy who just about got cut in training camp last year and had to get pulled out of a blowout the year before because he was so miserable. And he is playing on the same offense who the year before was the highest scoring offense in history. He is just too much risk to cough up 30 or so million and valuable draft picks. With the Vikings, the numbers would probably translate into this annually: 2800 passing yards, 15-16 TD, 13-14 INT, and 0 super bowls.

Merx,

I’m assuming the Hasselbeck(for his wife) you are refering to is Tim. He is currently working for ESPN so he would come on the cheap!

Chris says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:19 pm

Also, while not my top picks, I’d rather have A.J. Feeley or Todd Collins than Rex Grossman or Culpepper.

muxhut says:

I have no proof for this, but isn’t MN sort of a place where old quarterbacks go to die? Wouldn’t a QB with any other viable options be fighting to stay away from MN? Maybe that’s no longer a valid, if it ever was.

I do think Favre at least would be glad to play here, if only to complete his legacy-demolition campaign.

Off topic link - here’s a guy who gets Malcolm Gladwell.

loren says:

Was Favre only signed for 1 year by Jets? I know there was a Vikings Poision Pill in it and was curious if that was one year only. I believe we would still be playing if we had gotten him this past season. He can do more then throw 5 yards or less.

Onslow says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:30 pm

My QB wish list:

1. David Carr, a change of scenery would do him good.

2. Mark Bulger, who knows what he could do running Chilly’s “Kick A$$” offense.

3. Derek Anderson, how can you go wrong with a scandanavian name? Look how it worked out for Peterson.

Michael Rand says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:32 pm

loren: that’s a good question and something I thought about. My understanding is that if the Jets release Favre and end the experiment at one year — not out of the realm of possibility based on the ripping he’s been taking lately — there is no poison pill. It’s only if they trade him.

James says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:32 pm

We should get a veteran, but proven backup for cheap and trade up for Bradford. This team will go nowhere without a solid quarterback, but we can’t afford one so we’ll have to develop one. I suggest:

1. Seneca Wallace
2. Byron Leftwich
3. Sage Rosenfelds

Judd says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:34 pm

Carson Palmer? I realize he is having surgery so that is always a question mark.

I would like to see the vikings go get someone who will be a solid QB for the next 2-3 yrs, and draft a qb first pick we have. Bringing in someone and expecting them to start has failed so many times for so many teams, why do people want to keep trying it?

Barland says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:38 pm

Michael Vick appears to be available after jail.

Unrestricted and probably looking for a team that has pretty good potential…along with a fan base that would forgive his transgressions if he could win.

Vick the Viking sounds good…

Buffalo says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:41 pm

Although as a Packer fan I once was opposed to Minnesota getting Favre, I have to say I would love it at this point. After seeing what he went through in New York this year and realizing he should have just stayed retired, seeing that mess end up in Minnesota would be so much fun and help the team implode.

Buffalo says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:42 pm

Barland, if Wilf signs Vick, who might not even a quarterback when he comes back, he can kiss any chance of a new stadium goodbye.

As another person put it, there is zero chance Farve comes here because of that poison pill so why even put him this list? Do some research idiots.

Brandon says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:43 pm

What in the world does Favre have to do to convince the world he’s terrible? He’s already perfected the “be really awful on the field” thing, and seems to have proven he isn’t well-liked in the locker room. What more do you people want?

(Closed-circuit to stat geeks: what is the preferred statistic to judge QBs? QB Rating can’t be it. Something from Football Outsiders?)

Big Jimmy says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:44 pm

Cassel would be a mistake. One year on a superbly talented team does not a great quarterback make (see Derek Anderson). T-Jack could be/have been a good quarterback, but the Vikings braintrust screwed the pooch. He needed 2-3 years of Yoda-like tutelage (like Aaron Rodgers behind Favre) before he was turned loose. The Vikings erred in not bringing in someone like Garcia or Brees for that period of time. So my list goes like this:

A) McNabb
B) Garcia
C) Collins
D) Don Majkowski (hell, if the other decrepit old guys can do it, why can’t he?)

Ovie says:

I did do some research and it seems the “poison pill” doesn’t address Favre being cut and going to an NFC North team. So who’s the real idiot?

Mars says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:48 pm

The Derek Anderson we saw in 2007.

Buffalo says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:49 pm

Yeah, the team known for the “Love Boat” scandal should go and sign Michael Vick. No possible backlash there, is there?

Onslow says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:50 pm

Brandon, my preferred statistic to judge QB’s is TD-Int ratio and wins. QB rating doesn’t do nothing for me.

Tinman says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:51 pm

The problem isn’t the qb choice, its the coach. Chilly can’t develop a young qb. He’s too complex and his terminology is too confusing (we’ve all heard the interviews), and he is unwilling or unable to build up a young guy’s confidence.
Also, we’ve seen two veterans, Johnson and Frerotte, fail under his system. Johnson had a few choice things to say upon leaving, and I’m willing to wager that Frerotte will, too, upon his release.

And before someone else mentions that Chilly mentored McNabb in philly, we don’t know what was really happening there so lets not give him all the credit just because he was on the staff.

QB says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:52 pm

I say we take Todd Bouman. He spent all year, or is still with, Baltimore and had a really well off season. When he was with the Vikes he put up some good numbers. He’d be better than anyone we have now!

William says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:52 pm

It would be better to put Wilf in as QB instead of TJ. As for Cassel, he better be packaged with wes and Moss because he would be that bad without them. Can you trade our future for a franchise QB in the draft? You would have at least 10-15 years to build back up around said QB… Or higher another artifact, at this point with Chilly running the game I am not sure anyone really cares that much.

Tony Barone says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:54 pm

If the Eagles win the next game or more, there is no way that the Eagles will allow McNabb to go away easily.

I would like Garcia and then draft Sanchez in the first round (if he is still available). We could have Garcia (San Jose State), JD Booty (USC) and Sanchez (USC).

Charles says:

January 7th, 2009 at 12:56 pm

Todd Marinovich [ROBO-QB]

Texas Vikes fan says:

January 7th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

What’s wrong with Booty? He’s already there and knows the system, so it won’t ake anything extra financially. He definitely couldn’t be any worse than TJ.

I lived through the Carr years in Houston. He doesn’t have the confidence to be a full time starter.
Everyone on your list is washed up or had problems elsewhere. What says they won’t have problems in MN?

If they do choose to go the draft route, I don’t think any of the first rounders are a mortal lock. Go into the second or third round, pick up a John Parker Wilson, or a Chase Daniel. You get more value out of the pick.

Michael says:

January 7th, 2009 at 1:01 pm

Top 5 IMO:

Henry Burris
Sex Cannon Grossman
Harrington
Ken Dilger
Corey Schlessinger

Michael Rand says:

January 7th, 2009 at 1:02 pm

Brandon: I still think Favre could be decent here. Thomas Jones is a good back, but not elite like Peterson. There would be a maximum of four cold-weather games (at Chicago, at Green Bay, at Pittsburgh, at Cleveland) in the regular season.

TJack! Or just release him. Getting pulled after two games was a joke. In the first round we need a WR. I am not opposed to trading up for Crabtree. If the line blocks as poorly as they did this year, no QB can take this team to the Super Bowl.

The current #1 and #2 on the roster are not the answer going into next year. Either you promote JDB and hope he can be close to Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco……
My choice:
1. David Carr
2. Derek Anderson
Both have the potential to VERY GOOD with our supporting cast.

Tom says:

January 7th, 2009 at 1:16 pm

Carr is the only one who jumps out as available, competent and relatively long term. He was surrounded by retreads and marginal players on an expansion team in Houston. We don’t know what he would do on a decent team.

If we’re going to make up ridiculous lists of QBs we’d like to see that will never happen, why not include:

Drew Brees
Philip Rivers
Jay Cutler
Matt Ryan

I don’t think there are a lot of good, realistic, viable options for them. Maybe they could finally pull the trigger for Sage Rosendfelds–but after what he pulled this year, not sure that’s much help either.

ROCCO says:

January 7th, 2009 at 1:23 pm

how much do you think we would have to give up to go get bradford. it will be more then jared allen. do you really want to mortgage that much of the future to get an unproven college qb come on. we have the team to win now if we can get at least a decent veteran qb.

Onslow says:

January 7th, 2009 at 1:24 pm

It won’t take much to improve this teams QB situation. We don’t need a guy who goes 28 for 32 and 350 yds. all we need is someone who will be able to complete 18-20 passes for 200 yards, which is alot better than what Tar Jackson has done. I remember after the second Lions game when Tar Jackson went 8 for 10 and everyone thought he was the next Doug Williams.

McNabb is too old. Cassel would be best or give Booty a shot. Regardless, it’s “Time for a cool change” as the Little River Band has taught us. Starting 2009 with T-Jack as starter is not an option as many home games will be blacked out as the fans know his lameness oh so well and Zygi will lose money. Also, give Kluwe and extension as we must establish the punt. All is not lost though as the pattern is 6-10, 8-8 now 10-6. If it holds, Vikings will be undefeated Super Bowl Champs in 2011. “Take the high road” as coach Denny Green has taught us. Hope for a change as Barry has taught us.

No way, no how, no Vick says:

January 7th, 2009 at 1:28 pm

Sign Michael Vick, and I cancel my four season tickets, and I’m not alone. The Vikings would kiss their stadium goodbye and really start to run into trouble selling out regular season playoff games.

On the other hand, not paying $300 per game would free up a lot of cash for PowerBall tickets…

All signs point to Booty being terrible. Brad Johnson is just like Gus but without a chin or an arm. If we really feel we have a chance at a playoff run we need to bring in someone who can move a little and get the ball down field with accuracy. TXVikingsFan says:

The offensive system and play calling are the culprit here. Chilliwacks offense is a quarterback killer. It has the capacity to take a good quarterback and make him look inept. It takes a bad quarterback and makes him look worse. McNabb plays in the same type offense. How may full seasons has he played in the last 10 years? How many injuries? TJack is probably an average NFL quarterback at best, but he looks awful playing for the Chilli. Coaching and systems are the problem here not quarterbacks.

Zygi Wilf has tried almost everything he can do to get support for a new stadium, except two things: 1. Dump Brad Childress and bring in a big name coach (Mike Shannahon, Bill Cower, Tony Dungy, etc.). 2. Bring in the biggest name and best QB available, even at the cost of salary and draft picks.

I don’t see Childress being let go coming off winning the division — too much of an impression of an impatient and intolerant owner and a chaotic organization.

That leaves the QB option as the most likely move. I expect them to talk with teams that are rebuilding which have a good QB with some years left, even if the talks go nowhere or aren’t made public.

Among the QBs who the Vikings will express interest in are: Carson Palmer, Mark Bulger, Matt Hasselbeck, and Jon Kitna.

Kitna will probably be available for nothing if the Lions go with Matt Stafford and keep Dante Culpepper. Bulger may also be free if he’s a salary cap casualty. Who knows the story with Hasselbeck.

But if the price for Cassell is two No. 1s, and Anderson will cost at least one No. 1, and both haven’t proven to be more than one-year wonders, why not offer the same deal — and perhaps throw in a young defensive player like Ray Edwards or Cedric Griffin — to Cincinnati for Palmer? They’re an organization that needs to blow up it’s roster and start over, and Palmer is their one tradable asset to build from (think KG with the Wolves).

Palmer’s still fairly young for a veteran QB (a good 5-6 years left if inuries havn’t taken a long-term toll), has proven to play at a Pro Bowl level, and probably will be even better once he gets out of the dysfunctional situation he’s with the Bengals. He’d look good in a Vikings uniform.

Adam says:

January 7th, 2009 at 2:24 pm

I think McNabb will be good for another 3 years if that, and only be good here if we keep Chilly (which if we are stuck with him for more than 1 more year, we’re screwed) Cassell would be good, but beware of the D. Anderson affect, only one year as a starter in a contract year, don’t know much about him. Haselback would be okay but he is going down hill quick. The best is look at what Booty can do, give him a chance, he knows how to run the offence better than TJack since he came from the same type of system. Tebow is going to be a big fat bust, if you pick Tebow may as well draft Adam Webber from the Gophers next year, they will do the same thing in the NFL nothing. I think you look at Kitna if the Lions drop him, maybe try for Garcia. Bring a vetern in if you want to groom Booty or if you draft a QB with POTENTIAL. Or roll the dice with Cassel.

Derek Anderson — his career can be resurrected . . . and he can now be had for a bag of chips (didn’t we try to trade half our team’s draft choices for him last year). Without Quinn looking over his shoulder, he could do the job. And pick up another legit WR as well.

Macleod says:

January 7th, 2009 at 2:34 pm

OMG. All of these choices make me think 10-6 would be a successful year next year. We are truly in trouble. I’m starting to weep…

But, if I can dream a little dream, I would obtain another WR via free agency ($20 mil under cap I’ve heard. Although Wilf did not want to address if he would spend that). Then obtain a better free agent QB that would be here for 2-3 years. Although I’m not particularly excited about any of the possibilities I’ve heard people throw around. And then I would trade up in the draft to obtain a high level QB from a high level Div. 1 school. With the $20 mil to spend under the cap I believe we could address several areas, to include: QB, WR, offensive and defensive line.

Cross Grossman, Culpepper, and Leftwich off the list immediately - all three are awful and wouldn’t be an upgrade at the position. That being said, Johnny Unitas would have a hard time running the Childress/Bevell trainwreck offense.

I’ve liked Derek Anderson as well. Good point, when you have someone looking over your shoulder you might just as well pack your bags and look for a team that will let you drive. I think he could do a good job, but I still have a good feeling about Booty.
We’ve got him….try him!!

DarthspacenVader says:

January 7th, 2009 at 2:39 pm

Here’s my realistic wish list:

1: David Carr - yes he wasn’t very good in Houston, but here’s some facts. In 5 seasons for Houston he was sacked 249 times (broke the record with 68 in 1 season) he also rushed for over 1,200 yards…. both are signs to me that his O-line was causing him trouble.

#2: Sage Rosenfels - Has played half of Shaubs career in Houston, and has filled in well as a backup… What can he do as a full time starter? I’d like to see.

#3: Derek Anderson - Everyone saw how dismal Cleveland was… His recievers were among the league leaders in drops and his job is now Brady Quinns. Do I think we should pay a lot for him? No, but if we can get him at a reasonable price… I say give him a shot.

#4 Matt Hasselback - We have a good O-line to guard him. We have a great running game to take pressure off of him. He’s known for not turning the ball over, making good decisions, and being accurate… two of the major problems we’ve had with T-jack. Also, i think we could get him at a resionable price.

#5 Kurt Warner - We’d pay out the rear end for him… but a guy who makes good decisions and has been playing in a pass happy offense with zero run game = A guy who I think could play even better without a constant blitz.

Liz says:

January 7th, 2009 at 2:40 pm

I know the guy has been convicted, but what about Michael Vick and then pick up Tim Tebow in the draft?

andrew says:

January 7th, 2009 at 2:40 pm

Anderson IS THE BEST FIT!!!! I don’t know how you have him listed so low. That has to be the worst list EVER! Honestly, the only reason he struggled this year is because his Wrs all dropped easy passes. That along with his struggling O-line and Defense caused him to loose. Even experts said it wasn’t his fault this year. This all said i would much rather pay cheaper for Anderson than give up an arm and a leg for Cassel..

armoccasin says:

None of the above. If that is all we have to choose from then I say, draft a Q.B. and forget about the Superbowl for another 2-3 years. Let’s get real here. None of these Q.Bs. that are listed are worth much more than Jackson. They’re too old or not as good as they appear at first glance. I say, Draft Tim Tebow. He’s Culpepper only with a brain.

MinnesotaTex says:

January 7th, 2009 at 2:44 pm

I like the guys referencing Hasselbeck because of his wife. I assume you are referencing Elizabeth Hasselbeck from The View who is married to TIM Hasselbeck. Not MATT Hasselbeck. Tim is Matt’s brother and WAS a career backup in the NFL.

I know you meant it to be funny, but you ended up looking like a football idiot.

Macleod says:

January 7th, 2009 at 2:45 pm

The problem I have is the suggestions for all these QB’s that are currently under contract with a team. And also the many QB’s listed that were injured this year. Which QB’s are free agents? Because that is the list that we are going to sign somebody from. I just don’t see us getting Anderson or other QB’s that are already under contract. Besides, wasn’t Brady Quinn injured at the end of the year? Won’t Cleveland keep Anderson as insurance for Quinn’s injury?

And enough of the jokey people throwing names of QB’s that have been retired for years or decades. We get it. It’s hilarious. Now stop.

Why all the love for John David Booty? What has he done to deserve a shot? Other than looking god awful in preseason against 3rd stringers I mean.

Macleod says:

January 7th, 2009 at 2:50 pm

Did somebody just compare John David Booty to Brett Favre? I think I actually just read that. Wow. Just wow. But I guess I forgot. It’s cheap!

I also saw Troy Aikman go 1-15 with Dallas. Tarvaris Jackson has a much better record as a starter. So? It means nothing.

Macleod says:

January 7th, 2009 at 2:52 pm

I admit I know nothing about Booty. What round did we draft him in? 6? 7? Just because Brad Johnson and Tom Brady were drafted in the 7th round does not mean John David Booty is going to get us a Superbowl ring next year. With the disasters and experiments we had at QB, Booty was never considered. Why? I guess I’ll have to guess because he would have been a disaster.

Interesting stat from last Sunday. AP’s yards per rush were the best when running off the right side of the line. And he had zero fumbles when running to that side. I was surprised.

My assessment of Favre is that his WR’s in Green Bay saved his ass over and over again. The Jets didn’t have the WR’s to outjump and fight for a ball. Neither does Minnesota. Favre’s numbers in Green Bay the last couple years were a result of throwing into double coverage and watching GB’s WR’s come down with the ball. Anybody want that in MN? I don’t.

I think Hasselbeck & McNabb make the most sense given their age (Early 30’s). But I don’t think Philly is going to trade McNabb now because of his current success. Hasselbeck makes more sense because the Seahawks are looking to start rebuilding next year with a new coach. Plus he has experience and has proven he can win. He stats this year weren’t great because of injuries and a terrible offensive line. But his stats last year were great! Garcia, Warner are just too old. Why the hell didn’t the Vikes go after Shaub, Garcia, or Brees the past few years?

Macleod says:

January 7th, 2009 at 3:00 pm

The part of Jackson’s game that bothered me the most was what he did when under pressure. No, I don’t mean throwing TD’s in the other direction. I mean the back pedaling. Did he ever side step a rush? Roll out against the rush? He seemed to simply back pedal until he was tackled. Jackson reminds of Culpepper. Strong arm. Can do exactly what you tell him to do if the WR is open on that play. But he cannot think for himself or think in a hurry. He can’t read a defense. He doesn’t anticipate WR routes, he needs the WR to be open before releasing the ball. That crap works great in college or if you have the likes of Randy Moss, but it doesn’t work well when you have average receivers or you are under pressure. That is why I don’t see Jackson being the future of any NFL franchise. And that is why Culpepper imploded the second Randy Moss left Minnesota.

Let’s not kick T. Jack to the curb like all the others. He is not the root of all evil. Childress and his puppet Bevell are the real issue. Nepatism does not work well. What does Bevell’s resume look like. Ahhhh… I quartebacked for Childress in college. Pleeeeease. Chilly Sucks and is a control freak. If T. Jack was coached by anyone with “knowledge” of the game (and that players would really respect) then he would be a lot further along in his development.
If we throw this baby out with the bathwater (like Bouman and Thigpen) I’ll be pissed.
Childress IS a QB killer. His system of square peg in round hole/bigger hammer offense is embarassing. Defensive coordinators drool over idiotic, maniacal, OCD, backwardass freaks like Choke (not coach) Childress.

carson palmer in purple is our answer! we trade our 1st round draft pick and swap 3rd round draft picks with the bungles for him.

the bungles are so bad, they need massive rebuilding, and so they could use their top pick for a qb (either bradford, stafford, or even mccoy) to replace palmer, and then they can use the other 1st round pick that they’d get from us to continue rebuilding.

bradford most likely won’t be available to them, however, but here’s a list of teams with the top draft picks:

1) lions could use bradford
2) rams have bulger
3) chiefs have thigpen and look like they want to develop him
4) browns have quinn and andersen
5) seahawks have hasselbeck
6) here we are at the bengals…

it’s not a stretch to think that stafford and/or mccoy will be there, and if they want bradford, they could trade up.

then, our vikings will finally have a solid qb again!! and i use “again” loosely…

however, let’s not forget that this offseason, WE HAVE TO RESIGN CHESTER TAYLOR!!! many times, he did better than AP!!! i’m not saying he’s better than ap, but he definitely was a spark used to spell him, and he was very effective. don’t forget about him!

other needs are a linebacker (ej will be back, i know, but we need depth) and daaaaang do we need help on special teams!!!

speaking of which, WHY DON’T WE PUNT THE DANG BALL OUT OF BOUNDS EVERY TIME??!?!?!?!! Because of accuracy issues, we may not have as long of a punt, but at least we won’t allow freakin’ so many returned tds and yards!!! can someone explain why we don’t do that PLEASE????

Macleod says:

January 7th, 2009 at 3:06 pm

What exactly was the nature of Hasselbeck’s injury last year? Wasn’t it his back? That would be very dangerous to pick him up and discover his back isn’t healed. And, is he under contract? Is Seattle trying to get rid of him? Garcia is old, that’s true. But he sure looked like he could scramble when we played him this year.

It feels like were trying to choose the lesser of two evils here. I just can’t get excited about a single name mentioned here today. There is really only about 10 good QB’s in the NFL today. The rest you have no idea on a game to game basis what you are going to get.

Frerotte was 8-3 as a starter this year, not sure why he lost his spot. Tarvaris had 1.5 good games and Chilly saw the chance to say “see, I told you so” then Jackson let him and us down again. The only reason Jackson was good against Detroit was they prepared for Frerotte, then AZ had just clinched and they didn’t even show up. It is not hard to play QB when the other team spots you 21 pts. He did not have to make any plays in the clutch. Go after McNabb or Leftwich, or keep Frerotte and make Booty #2 and put Tarvaris on special teams.

Macleod says:

January 7th, 2009 at 3:11 pm

I may agree that Childress certainly is not the man to coach a new QB, but you lost me when you used the names Baumann and Thigpen. Neither one has done anything in the NFL. And don’t give me the stats for Thigpen from his starts this year. Much like Aaron Rodgers, all I saw was a QB that can throw up some nice personal numbers while losing a ball game.

I do think the offense play calling is to blame also. I know that Thigpen has struggled in KC also, but I liked his skills better than any of them (TJack, Booty, Frerotte). And most QB’s struggle their first year. It will be interesting if he ever comes around or if he disappears. We have so little patience these days in QB’s. kevin mchale has been and is the cancer to the wolves. look at his record. he has had only two good moves in his entire tenure, and that’s getting kg in and getting kg out. getting him out was a good move only because kg is the man and deserved a championship, and that obviously was not going to happen in minni.

other than that, mchale has given contracts and/or traded for some “AWESOME” people like:

1) troy hudson
2) wayne simien
3) mark madsen
4) ndi ebi
5) i could go on

also, he wasted years of draft picks on JOE SMITH!!! THERE’S someone you want to throw away a franchise on!!

not to mention drafting ndi ebi over josh howard! oh, and trading brandon roy away. foye is alright, but he’s no roy!

and this year, what did he do? trade the one good draft pick he’s had since kg away!!! mayo’s got a solid chance for rookie of the year, and if he does win it, that’ll be TWO CONSECUTIVE YEARS mchale traded away the rookie of the year!!!

then, in the second round, he got rid of chalmers nad drafted some no name instead of marc gasol!!! why??? why haven’t we gotten him the heck outta dodge????

without him, we’d have:

1) brandon roy
2) oj mayo
3) josh howard
4) al jefferson
5) marc gasol

Fire Childress. He’s a terrible game manager. Fire Bevell too.

Pick up one of these QB’s:
Sage Rosenfelds
Derek Anderson
Matt Leinert
Carson Palmer if he can be had at a reasonable price.

And pick up one of these QB’s:
Sanchez, Daniel, or other decent draft pick.
or give Booty a shot

Then:

Have AP spend the off-season learning how to block in the passing game and developing his pass-catching skills so he can be more of threat.

Upgrade the right side of the line.

Add another DE who can get at the QB.

Get another CB. Cedric Griffin is only OK. Hits well, but gets burned too often and rarely comes up with a pick.

Why has no one stated the obvious? Vikes have a low first round pick and relatively weak receivers. Add to it the success of the wildcat this year and all signs point to Tebow. He won’t be drafted high and he’s a perfect fit for the “kick @ss offense”.

Have been a Viking fan all my life. Now live in Arizona. The cards are going to offer Warner another contract so why don’t the Vikings try and get Matt Leinart. He could be a great QB for the Vikings.

David says:

January 7th, 2009 at 4:22 pm

Well if we are going with ex-gophers, what about Billy Cockerham and get Thomas Hamner to replace Peterson… Cockerham was on the vikes before… but in all seriousness, why didn’t the vikes go and get Drew Bledsoe, he retired, and maybe wanted to stay that way… but even at an old age he still will pass for 3,000 yard and 15-20 TD’s and 10-15 INT… if those are the options, might as well go with someone with a great arm

PACKER BACKER says:

January 7th, 2009 at 4:22 pm

Hey Rob J!

What is so funny about 10-6 for the Packers? That is a realistic prediction considering they will be healthy and playing the same crap teams in the North twice so there is 6 wins at least.

This past season the Packers were decimated with key injuries to their defense…they lost their best safety and hardest hitter in the secondary Atari Bigby early, lost Cullen Jenkins their best run stopper midway. Lost the teams leading tackler 3 seasons in a row in Nick Barnett midway as well.

Also lost Al Harris for two games their other shutdown corner and the list goes on with guys being banged up.

Packers outscored their opponents by 39 points and lost all of their games except 2 by 6 points or less.

Packers were the best worst record team in the entire NFL and the stats prove it.

Next season 10-6 is very reasonable and could even be better based on strength of schedule. Viqueens will be in the cellar alongside the Pussycats and Bears.

3. Volek
4. Cassel

6. Carr
7. Brennan
8. Leftwich

With the exceptions of Volek and Leftwich, the rest have a similar build and style…kind of like a Carson Palmer who can move. Get a guy in who can throw 250-275 with 2TDs regularly for a couple years, keep developing JD Booty, then let him loose.

The more I think about it, Hasselbeck may be the best option. Similar offense, still relatively young so Jackson can back him up for a couple of years or they can draft another QB to sit for a while. Hasselbeck has playoff experience and I think he is an above average QB. I also don’t think he would break the bank.

Seriously, they have absolutely wasted the last two years on Tavaris Jackson. He’s a reincarnation Michael Vick who can’t hit the broad side of a barn. Why wasn’t Ferrote playing? If it weren’t for him, they wouldn’t have had the record to get into the playoffs in the first place. The current team really isn’t bad, but this same team won’t be there a couple years from now and there will be other holes that need to be filled because guys either left or got old. The window of opportunity is going to close at some point soon and they will enter into the dreaded rebuilding phase. I’m a former season ticket holder who’s relocated and I’ve been a Vikes fan for about 35 years. Just once it would be nice to see them go all the way without choking.

PACKER BACKER says:

Stop drinking the Purple Kool Aid…

the so called Pro Bowl offensive line was a sieve in the Playoffs against Philly. If the Queens didnt have Peterson that team would be winless and you know it!

If Jackson is demoted and a veteran comes in he still would have just barely average WR’s to throw to.

The Packers on the other hand are loaded at WR and byfar have the best receiving unit in the entire NFL.

Queens have many weak position players and it shows when it comes to important BIG games. Once again the Queens back into the playoffs only to get bounced early as usual.

Packers even with their injuries at least wouldve made a game out of it…

On a side note who bought up the remaining Playoff tickets for those losers? Shouldve been blacked out as Minnesota doesnt deserve a pro football team with fans like some of you.

As for Viqueens going 14-2 ha ha now that’s freaking hilarious!

You Packer Backers are hilarious. Loaded with the best recieveing core in the NFL? How far did that get you this year? I see nothing but a bleak future for your franchise. The highlight of the season was watching your team struggle while Favre enjoyed moderate success in NY. In fact I enjoy watching the Packers struggle more than I enjoy watching a Vikings victory. Gotta love a crappy Packers team. You just go ahead and keep cheering on your beloved losers.

flvikesfan69 says:

January 7th, 2009 at 4:52 pm

Agree with Packerbacker that the offensive line was over matched in the Philly game, but the QB didn’t help that fact. If the QB can’t hit a receiver, he’s no threat, so why not just blitz all day. The defense was the only thing that kept us in most the game with Philly. We did have a “chance” for most of the game, but the defense can’t hold them forever and you knew it was only a matter of time before Philly started to put points on the board. We just didn’t have a QB with the ability to do the same.

I agree about the WR’s. Berrian is alright, but they need to upgrade at that position also. Can’t agree with you on the Packers as being the “best” receiving unit in the NFL. They have better talent that we do though.

I also agree that a good portion of the Vikings fans are fairweather. When I lived there and had season tickets, it used to bug me that only a portion of the fans wore their colors to the game. I saw more “dressed” Vikings fans when they played in Miami a couple years ago than I ever remember seeing in the dome. The ones that live in other states seem like more passionate fans.

flvikesfan69 says:

DarthspacenVader says:

Why isn’t there much talk about Carr. I’ve loved that kid since he came out. He’s got a huge arm and is as tough as nails. As said before… you can’t judge his performace in Houston since he broke the record for most times sacked. If you ever watched a game he was in he was running for his life every 2 plays. He’s now had the opportunity to watch a good QB in Eli… He’s young, he’s not injury prone, he can throw a deep ball, and he’d greatly benefit from a decent O-line. I mean, look what he did with the Giants O-line. He almost beat the Vikings with backups. Another perk would be that I think the Vikes could get him from NYG for a resonable price.

tim tebow is the correct choice and we could get him in the second round. start every play with tebow, adrian, and chester on the field. Draft or sign through free agency another athletic/speedy receiver to team with Berrian.

A scary triple option/deep play offense. Childress would find a way to not be creative though and the team would fail. Sign a new offensive coordinator. Bevell sucks

gadphly says:

January 7th, 2009 at 5:28 pm

Hasselbeck would be my first choice, because he knows the west-coast offense and probably wouldn’t cost too much, but only if he’s healthy and the Vikings can keep him that way. He missed time early this year with a bulging disk in his back, returned for a couple weeks, then got sacked 7 times by the Cowboys and never played again. Meanwhile, the Vikings gave up more sacks than all but a half-dozen or so teams, and the (supposedly) more mobile Jackson was sacked just as frequently as the immobile Frerotte. So if the Vikings decide to trade for Hasselbeck, the first thing they should do is sign Jordan Gross away from Carolina. I’m not sure if Gross is a Pro Bowler, but he’s very good, still fairly young, and I think he can play both OT spots, so he would be a huge upgrade over Cook at ROT and a terrific insurance policy at LOT in case McKinnie screws up again.

STOP! Anybody who has mentioned Culpepper or Favre should be punched in the ear. Until we have a RT that can do more than drool we can’t have a leftie at QB. A long as Mt. McKinnie stay’s out of prison, we should have a rightie at QB. Jackson ain’t that bad. (Insert boo/hiss here) He’s really not. Hotlanta got lucky with their rookie QB. LUCKY. It doesn’t happen often. McNabb, no thanks. Garica, no thanks. Cassell, overrated. (My mom could throw for 4000 yards on that offense) Ditch Ferrotte or trade him, package some of our picks and go after one of the good QB’s in the draft. Vick could potentially be dangerous with AP and CT next to him, but would we really want that baggage? My dog would HATE that. (She just won’t ever forgive him) I think at this point we should be more concerned about the players that are leaving and moving on to, yet again, a new Defensive coord. How far can Cowher throw a football?

1) Carr is better than his numbers, he deserves a chance to start again in the NFL.
2) Leftwich looked pretty good filling in for Ben when he went down.
3) Anderson, had 1 great year and still has it in him in the right system. He’s young but smart.
4) Vick - it would be entertaining at least. How about a 2 QB offense with TJack and Vick on the field at the same time. Running option flee flickers and half back passes. How many times have you seen the snap Ronnie Brown got and scored? That’s nothing compared to the 2 QB system.
5) TJack - Philly is GOOD! Remember how ridiculous Dallas and Romo looked against them. I would be surprised if them or NYG aren’t in the Super Bowl. If Gus played that game, Philly would have had a least 6 sacks.

I DO NOT want to see a washed up old guy under center. We need a two year Super Bowl plan with next year us being a serious contender and the following year the contender. Wilf has invested a lot of money getting Chili the players he wants and now is the time Chili needs to get these guys to deliver. A coach can’t prevent fumbles and stupid mental mistakes but more conservative than Alan Keys play calling has to go.

2. McNabb, but Philly ain’t gonna let him go

3. Garcia- always a winner

4. Collins- Tennessee ain’t gonna let him go

5. Leftwich- doesn’t make mistakes that will hurt you and is tough

The rest on the list have as much downside as upside- there really isn’t that much out there. They are either fragile (Hasselbeck, bulger), Good with a stud wideout (Warner,Rosenfels,Cassel)or mistake prone (Favre,Culpepper,Losman,Grossman).

If we would just get a coach and OC that have a clue how to play football these guys would be fine. With that said here is my list of available coaches ranked in order we should try and get 1) Mike Tice- laugh all you want, he can get the most out of his players and actually knows how to play football- anyone who can take the 2005 Viks team to 9-7 and 1 game away from the playoffs with Red “Tight Ass” McCombs as the owner, desreves another chance to coach here with an owner like Ziggy 2) Brian Billick- Offensive genious, can get the job done with our defense playing well 3) Leslie Frazier- get him before he leaves and goes somewhere else and kicks ass 4)Bill Cowher- enough said 5)Dennis Green- at least we made the playoffs every year 6)Bill Parcels- enough said 7)Mike Martz- another offensive genious, can make our offense play alot better 8)Mike Nolan- at least he looks better than Chilly on the sideline Bottomline is the players on the team ARE GOOD ENOUGH- it is the coach that sucks. Honestly, I still don’t think that QB is the Vikings’ number one area of concern. True, Jackson had a terrible playoff game, but he showed a lot of promise in the last part of the season. Also, I think that it is more important that the Vikes slightly improve the team around him. Specifically, I think that they should pursue a dependable possession-type receiver in the draft or free agency. Also, the defense could use a shutdown corner (I think that Oakland’s Nnamdi Asomugha is available - the Vikings should sign him on the first day of free agency!). If they addressed those two needs, and managed to make up for the departure of Darren Sharper and Matt Birk, it really wouldn’t matter who the quarterback is.

cynical fan says:

January 7th, 2009 at 7:39 pm

I like David Carr. His first years were spent getting hammered, (not the fun kind) by a poor Houston line. He’s proven to be tough, and he looked better than Manning, (either one of them) against the Vikes. I think the time spent on the sidelines has also improved his game mentally.

Remember, he was a number one pick a few years ago. If he’s available, the Vikes could not only have the veteran QB they so desparately need, but they’d have a guy young enough to maybe the the future of the franchise.

Without a great free agent QB deal, the Vikes are going to be also-rans again next year. They can’t contend without one. I like T-Jack, but he needs to fill a dual role, like “Slash” did for the Steelers a few years ago.

Lastly, and sadly… Without fixing that horrible right side of the line, and maybe replacing that big stone monument we have at left tackle, any QB we have under center is going to get mauled. Gotta keep Birk, too. If the Vikes let a great LOCAL boy go, I’m gonna root for whoever’s playing against them.

Why not let the Pats keep Cassell and try and get Brady? He may not be ready for next year but would be a great tutor for JDB or another young QB. If nto Brady, how about trying to get Troy Smith from Baltimore? He ahas been in the league for 3 years and could probably get him pretty cheap. He won’t be seeing any playing time anytime soon behind Flacco.

If you are questioning Garcia and his age, why not just call Fran the Man, Kramer or Bradshaw. Any one of them is probably a better bet than T-Jack or Frerotte.

On another note, Chilly and Bevel need to go. Their offense has no imagination and if you recall while Chilly was in Philly, Reid called ALL of the offensive plays. Reid is probably the one that developed McNabb as well.

Or maybe there are some of us who think that killing dogs for fun isn’t a hobby that a good person has, and we aren’t going to pay money to watch such a person play a game.

If the Vikings sign Vick, they’re basically giving a huge middle finger to their fans who actually care about things beyond beating their chests and yelling obscenities at visiting fans. And in that case, I’ll simply stop giving them my money, and everyone wins.

I would love to see Tarvaris come back, a bit more polished, and with something to prove.

Our O-Line lost the second half of that game and Tarvaris had a bad 2nd half (and one throw) against a very cryptic defense.

With that said, I would love to see us pick up another vet who is a bit more mobile than Frerotte and draft another rookie.

Get rid of Booty. He’s worthless.

Bronx Vikings says:

January 8th, 2009 at 7:36 pm

I think more importantly, the Vikings need a RT, playmaking safety, a cornerback to push Ced Griffin into Nickel/Dime situations and No. 2 receiver.

If they continue with the FB position in that offense, I would say one of those too. Pass to Tahi for -2!
