fishing.jpgI refuse to talk about the weather this week. (It knows what it did.) Better to just kick off the weekend links, ASAP:

*If you’ve never seen the TV show “Top Gear,” as broadcast on BBC America and in many illegally downloaded forms, this clip might give you the best idea of what the show’s about (and why you should watch): two British car nerds attempt to turn a seventies-era Reliant into a space shuttle. Another good one: watch the three hosts attempt to go camping.

*Much as we all might hate Frank Caliendo (FRANK TV JUST SHUT UP ALREADY), you have to admit: his Charles Barkley impersonation is funny. Doubly so when he’s imitating Chuck hanging out with Urkel.

*London just spent $629 million to pay for the Athletes’ Village and Media Center for the 2012 Olympics. Basically, the English taxpayers are spending over half a billion dollars to build facilities that will be turned into 3,000 homes, along with some office space, and I think we can all agree that those had better be some dang nice houses & offices, at $200 grand a pop. Also, Los Angeles will no doubt be making a bid any day now to steal the Olympics from London.

*You know how the ratings for pretty much every televised sport are down this year? Well, the NHL’s ratings are up, even on national TV. Maybe hockey is more popular in economic downtimes; when we’re depressed, it’s nice to have a place to turn to watch Canadians punching each other’s faces in, isn’t it?

*And finally: so the Gophers have Southern Cal on the schedule for 2010 and 2011. Gopher fans are both excited and somewhat frightened; USC has won nine straight against the Big Ten, most of which were complete butt-kickings. Quotes from around the USC blogosphere: “Frankly, I’d be more impressed if they scheduled UConn?” “At least it isn’t some crappy FCS school.” Well, they seem excited, don’t you think?

That’ll do it for me; I’m off for a fun Saturday, filled with attempts to get cars started! Ah, what a wonderful state …
