Monday (Hype Week) Edition: Wha’ Happened?

hype1.jpgThis is the kind of week that 24-hour news cycles attempt to thrive upon. The NBA, NHL and college hoops are very much into regular season grind mode. Baseball is weeks away, still, from spring training. And, of course, the Super Bowl is coming up on Sunday. The former means every “big” game will be magnified in an attempt to make you think it has great significance. The latter means get ready for six days of excruciating hype. What does that mean for you? It means now is the time to start carving out some quality time for those things you care about outside of the sporting world. By all means, of course, this should not diminish your readership or participation here. Just know that while you are here, you are in a place safe from the evils of examining the matchup at backup tight end between the Steelers and Cardinals. We will not attempt to bulldoze you with notions that a game from the middle of the NBA or NHL season — while potentially entertaining and worthy of your viewing if you so choose — will have Magna Carta-like implications on the rest of the free world. We will forgive you if you continue to fret over the left side of the Twins’ infield, or their bullpen. But we will not engage in any “sky is falling” rhetoric, instead saving that for when the rusty lads actually return to the Florida fields.

If you can pledge perspective, breadth of interest and quality quips, then by goodness we think you have what it takes to make it through this week as a RandBaller. Before you know it, Sunday will be here, and it’s the greatest game in the world and wow look it’s already February that means baseball starts sooner than you think and hey could the Wolves keep this up and what about Joe Crede and the NHL trading deadline what will the Wild do and are the Gophers for real?

Fasola-link! Now there’s a sign to steal.
