TFD: The Minnesota sports untouchables

Well, Jama certainly touched a nerve with Stu and Jon by asking if Kent Hrbek was “the most overrated Twin of all time?” As someone who did not grow up as an avid Twins follower — and as someone who still has nightmares, not beautiful dreams, about Hrbek pulling Ron Gant off the bag in 1991 — we should probably defer to the experts on this one. But we will say this: his career numbers (and even his season-by-season numbers) were a little less impressive than we would have imagined. That said, we also recall he was a tremendous fielder and had plenty of big hits. He was, in addition, jolly. And finally, he was a part of the only two major pro sports championships in this market in the past half-century (though he did hit .154 and slug .262 all-time in the postseason).
But we’re not here to quibble about Hrbek (photo with Bert Blyleven from a golf tournament in 1996, by the way). Remember him as you wish. We are here to ask what other Minnesota athletes — justifiably or not — are untouchable when it comes to outside criticism and will be immediately defended by the likes of yourselves and others like you.
Us? We’ll be heading to watch soccer with The Marth and SuperRookie. Join in if you dare.
