General Managers: What’s it take to find a good one?

Over the last several months both the Wolves and Wild decided their GMs were no longer getting it done. The Wild couldn’t make the playoffs and the Wolves are the Wolves. The question I have is, why does the worst GM in town still have a job?

It’s been about 20 months since Bill Smith took over the Twins after Terry Ryan stepped down. For those that have either been too busy following Kevin Love’s Twitter page or Loving Mothers, Bill Smith has made some of the worst moves the Metrodome has seen since Herschel Walker came to town. Since taking over, Smith has traded away a Cy Young winner for a defensive outfielder and a bucket a balls, ended up on the wrong side of a lopsided deal involving the Tampa Bay Rays, signed Michael Cuddyer to an absurd contract extension, and failed to fill the biggest hole this past off season by bringing in Luis Ayala and R.A. Dickey to secure the bullpen. On the opposite side he has signed Justin Morneau to a reasonable extension and the Joe Crede signing is still a toss-up. I won’t even bring up the names of the horrible veteran signings last year. Twins fans couldn’t clean out Terry Ryan’s office fast enough when he made the decision to step down. Now we come to find out that his right-hand man, Smith, didn’t spend all those years learning the ropes but was really doing his best George Costanza impression. I’m waiting for Smith to streak across the field or to drive around the Metro with the World Series trophies tied behind his car.

I’ll leave you with this: with Risebrough and McHale out as GMs, who are currently the worst GMs in the 3.5 major sports?
