Friday (Putting on a show) edition: Wha’ Happened?

We imagine we’ve had some form of this discussion at some point or another, but it bears repeating in light of our attendance at last night’s Santigold show at First Avenue. Though the main act was barely on stage an hour, it was the most entertaining show we have seen in a while and probably the best overall show we’ve seen since Spoon a while back. Santigold gets it. Charismatic without being fake. Eclectic musically without being forced. Diva-ish without being brash. Musically, the act is diverse, but pretty simple. (The above clip is probably the most “poppy” song performed, and it’s kind of like a really good Juliana Hatfield song. Which is a compliment. But there was also some hip-hop, some reggae beats, some funk, you name it).
Which leads to the question: when you go to an event — such as a concert or sporting event — what sorts of qualities are you looking for? Do you want technical precision (Tim Duncan and/or a concert pianist)? Do you want a spectacle (Dennis Rodman and, we imagine, someone like Britney Spears)? Do you just know it when you see it (Santigold and/or ?) How are you entertained?
