Weekend Links with Jon Marthaler

penguins.jpgJon Marthaler delights you every Saturday with links for some leisurely weekend reading. Other times, you can find him here and here. The hockey was glorious last night. He can tell you more. Jon?

I thought about starting off today writing about last night’s epic Stanley Cup Game 7. Believe me, I could write pages — but you should have seen it already, and if you didn’t, I feel sorry for you. I could write two thousand words about how that game should turn you into a hockey fan, but if you weren’t already watching - or worse, you were watching but still don’t like hockey — then you’re already too far gone down Idiot Boulevard, all the way down to where it meets I’m-Dead-Inside Lane.

On with the links:

*We start with John “Twins Geek” Bonnes taking a long, five-part look at the failure of Delmon Young. Trust me, it’s worth the read: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 2.5 | Part 3 | Part 4

*The old Buzz Bissinger Memorial Blog vs. Journalist Debate reared its ugly head last week, as an online writer named Jerod Morris suggested that, given recent league history, maybe 37-year-old Raul Ibanez’s hot start isn’t entirely natural. This got back to Ibanez, who predictably went nuts, and several mainstream writers jumped all over Morris. Chief among these was FOX’s Ken Rosenthal, who looked to be ready to jump through an ESPN split-screen to get at Morris. As Brian Powell at Awful Announcing (who has the video) and AJ Daulerio at Deadspin point out, not only is Rosenthal completely condescending in the video, he’s actually kind of a hypocrite — as he wrote something similar a month ago.

*And finally, I’m about to do something that I’ve never done: I’m officially retiring Joe Posnanski’s Weekend Links number. I was about to link to him twice more this week, and I realized: if you’re not reading him on a regular basis at this point, then there’s nothing more I can do to convince you. Here’s a link to his blog, his Twitter, his published books, his upcoming book, his archive at Sports Illustrated, and his archive at the Kansas City Star. Sure, that’s a lot to follow, but it’s worth it.

Have a good Saturday, all. Hockey season is over; it’s time for summer to officially begin.

[Proprietor link: The Toonces51-endorsed Wifflin’ For Wishes. It’s Aug. 15, which sadly means we will not be able to participate (that’s the Saturday of the PGA, and we’ll be working the course). But if any other RandBallers would like to put together a team and represent the wiffle ball love, please do so].
