That’s us on Friday night with what we’re told is “Slider,” the dog that is the official mascot of the Sioux City Explorers. With a name like “Explorers” and a field named after Lewis and Clark, we would have envisioned some sort of Pioneer-themed mascot. But maybe the dog is more kid-friendly?

In any event, we use that picture as the jumping off point for a discussion of mascots.

What are the best ones? What makes a mascot a good one? And would you be more comfortable if the mascots were allowed to talk?

(Side note: Slider seemed genuinely frightened that we rushed up to him/her/it so fast).
