Monday (The Iowa Experience) edition: Wha’ Happened?

For those who didn’t read deep into the comments on last Friday’s post, we have a correction and an apology. You see, we constantly get Sioux Falls (S.D.) and Sioux City (Iowa) confused. And, as it turns out, we were really going to a baseball game in Sioux City, not Sioux Falls. Now: Sioux City does happen to be shouting distance from South Dakota and Nebraska. So we still feel as though we got the full Midwest experience.
As mentioned, we attended the Sioux City vs. St. Paul Saints game in Sioux City on Friday. Or, more to the point, we attended the first five innings before the entire crew abandoned the stadium during a delay in which lightning was flashing all around us and the sky was threatening to open up in a big way at any moment. The Saints were getting pounded, anyway, and batter who needed to strike out to provide $1 beers for the ensuing half inning kept making contact. So we headed to the bowling alley, where the bartender happened to be a huge
Twins fan. He had the game on the big screen and even put it on one of the unused scoring TVs above the lanes … just in time for us to see Minnesota blow the late lead and implode in extra innings. Just tremendous. We are so, so pleased that the desperate need for one more bullpen arm was not addressed at the trading deadline.
Saturday was the Blue Bunny ice cream museum tour, which included the epic, award-winning comedy/drama “From Cow to Wow,” a roughly 10-minute film with a wacky professor-type guy teaching us how ice cream is made. The best part was every so often, a Barney-from-the-Simpsons-esque voice would bellow: “Did you know that?” After the tour, of course, the day was dominated by Diddy’s wedding. It was a nice ceremony, followed by several hours of eating, drinking and dancing. Really, what more can you say? That’s what weddings are all about. But let it be known that Diddy is now a happily married man. Just another member of the RandBall collective to make the plunge. Between the wedding and the reception, by the way, is where that picture above was taken. There were some youths selling corn on the street. What they lacked in spelling ability, they made up for with creative signage and salesmanship. Cob-sucker, by the way, is our new favorite fake swear word.
Sunday was largely uneventful, except for a stop in Worthington for some delicious Mexican food at El Taco. Four large entrees and four drinks were less than $30. That’s hard to beat.
Questions to ponder:
1) Your favorite hidden gems for eating as you travel across these United States?
2) What’s the best way to get to Le Mars, Iowa — the right angle of Interstates 35 and 80 or the hypotenuse of Hwys 169 and 60? We chose the hypotenuse.
3) Complete this sentence: The Twins’ performance this weekend was …
