Torii Hunter: The $12 million bargain

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

It’s hard to say exactly what the Twins’ centerfielder would have been worth on the open market this year, but in light of the reported 7-year, $126 million offer made by the Jays to keep Vernon Wells, we have to imagine Torii could have done quite nicely for himself with a long-term deal. J.D. Drew got 5 years, $70 million. Considering his age, etc., Torii could have had at least 4 years and $60 million — if not more. (By the way, we linked to the canada.com Wells story because we love seeing the term “centre-fielder.” They’re so cute like that). Oh, and www.usa.com? Kind of strange. Â

Thursday edition: Wha’ happened?

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

Spurs 95, Wolves 82: Your Woofies had an early 16-point lead, but the final 18 minutes or so were quite unkind. How many of you sickos were actually hoping they would lose so the focus could be put squarely on Allen Iverson instead of a five-game winning streak? I know your type.

Hello and goodbye: The Twins severed ties with pitcher Willie Eyre and signed everyman infielder Jeff Cirillo. Now who’s going to pitch in those 12-1 Royals games? Hey, maybe Cirillo?

T.O. blames others: The AP is reporting that Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens believes there is a snitch in the locker room who has been making him look bad. We think perhaps the one making him look bad wears No. 81, and we hope he reads this and nabs himself in a net for a perfect Scooby Doo ending.

Come down off the Monster, Sox fans

It appears as though Daisuke Matsuzaka has agreed to a 6-year, $52 million deal with the Red Sox, according to SI.com. Um, that’s actually less than we thought he was going to get. We hope the young pitcher can still afford housing.Â

$100 million man?

Tuesday, December 12th, 2006

Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka is worth $100 million for a long-term deal … on top of the $51.1 million the Red Sox already ponied up for the right to negotiate with him, according to his agent, Scott Boras. Um, if you’re a Twins fan you might want to cower and whimper when considering the future market for Johan Santana. Oh, and just so we’re clear: This is a picture of Boras. And over here? This is not.
