Another roundup from near and far:

  • All aboard: If you missed it, here’s a Strib story on the popularity of Amtrak’s Empire Builder and the rise of trains in general.
  • Stymied by a stadium? The University of Minnesota has a web page with semi-regular updates on parking and road closures in the area where the new football stadium will rise; click here.
  • And some people think snow emergencies are confusing: The southern suburbs have a wide range of winter parking rules, many of which take effect this week — and many of which require you to know how much snow has fallen. For example, a mere one inch triggers a parking ban in Elko, while the hardier folks in New Market wait for three inches. (Maybe there’ll be a smackdown when the two cities merge on Jan. 1.) So put a yardstick in your car and click here.
  • More trails out west: The western suburbs’ network of bike trails is getting a boost with some money for a path through Fish Lake Regional Park in Maple Grove; the story is here.
  • Snoozing on the Hiawatha light-rail line? Perhaps an artist will be inspired to capture your blissful face. Today’s Chicago Tribune has this story about a woman who has used her cell phone to take hundreds of pictures of sleeping transit riders; her website is here.
