An answer and a question

Alert reader Froggie reminded me that I didn’t answer the “what would you do?” question from my post about the vehicle poised to make a wrong turn onto a one-way street. Readers had quite a few opinions about whether I should honk. (The post and comments are here; click on the picture at right to enlarge.)

The answer is: I decided to wait and see what happened once the light changed, and if the vehicle headed left toward oncoming traffic, I was prepared to honk. But when the light turned green, the Rover very slowly pulled ahead a bit, paused thoughtfully as it entered the intersection, had a belated moment of awareness, turned off its signal, and proceeded straight ahead. It would’ve been nice if the driver had read all the signs earlier, but at least catastrophe was averted.

Someone suggested I flash my lights or high beams at the driver, but in my experience, lots of drivers in Minnesota have no idea that you’re trying to get their attention when you do that. Many times, I’ve flashed my lights at people who are driving at night with their lights off, but it never seems to inspire them to turn theirs on. Is this a regional communication difference, or do I just tend to cross paths with the especially oblivious?

Also, I must side with those who say the “GB” sticker on the Rover means “Great Britain.” Green Bay Packers fans are everywhere, but this particular sticker had a little green Land Rover logo under the initials, so I think it was a salute to the vehicle’s national origins and not to our friends at Lambeau Field.
