Changing times and new tools

As you may have heard, things are a bit in flux here at Roadguy headquarters, in large part because we’ve been sold to a slightly mysterious company that has interests in, among other things, oil exploration. Naturally, many of my colleagues are concerned about things like buyouts, layoffs, and supertankers running aground in the newsroom. But Roadguy remains optimistic that the new owners will find him invaluable — after all, what could be more synergistic than transportation blogging and fossil fuels?

Slightly more seriously… Startribune.com will indeed be undergoing various changes in the coming months, and one of the things being considered for an upgrade is the traffic page. The current page consists of your basic MnDOT traffic map, which is a fine and useful tool, but technology has numerous other offerings — there are maps that provide estimated travel times, services that will send traffic conditions to your cell phone, websites with real-time traffic cams, etc.

As we ponder the dazzling array, Roadguy wants your input: How do you use communications technology and the Internet to make decisions about your commute and other local trips, and what would you like to see? What do you think of what’s already out there, from MnDOT’s web and radio presence to other media websites and broadcast reports? Do other metro areas have transportation information services that impress you? What ways might there be to help transit users and bicyclists?

Throw all your ideas at the wall, and we’ll see what sticks.
